Ex-Indonesia national team head coach Shin Tae Yong makes a comeback to manage Persija Jakarta in the land of thousands of islands.
Coach Shin Tae Yong has officially become the head coach of Persija Jakarta. The former Indonesian national team boss will now take over the hot seat at the club nicknamed "The Kemayoran Tigers."
Persija Jakarta is a traditionally rich Indonesian club, finishing 3rd in the 2025/26 season. This team has won the Indonesian league championship 11 times.
On Monday afternoon, Persija held a ceremony to unveil their new captain at the Jakarta International Stadium. Prior to this, rumors about the South Korean tactician taking over Persija Jakarta had been widely circulating.

Persija's president, Mohammad Prapanca, personally introduced Shin Tae Yong as the team's strategist for the upcoming season.
"I am Shin Tae Yong, and from today I am the new head coach of Persija Jakarta," Shin stated briefly at the beginning of the unveiling ceremony.
In Indonesian football, Shin Tae Yong is known as a coach who has achieved many historic milestones with various national team levels. Therefore, it is no surprise that the orange-clad fans (Persija) immediately showed great excitement.
With the Indonesian U23 team, Shin Tae Yong achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the semifinals of the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup.
After losing to Qatar U23 in their opening match, Indonesia U23 went on to beat Australia U23 and Jordan U23 consecutively. In the knockout stage, Indonesia U23 overcame South Korea U23 before falling to Uzbekistan U23 in the semifinals. Subsequently, Indonesia U23 lost 2-1 to Iraq U23 in the third-place match.
Coach Shin Tae Yong also left a strong mark at the senior national team level. The 55-year-old strategist led the Indonesian national team to the knockout stage of the Asian Cup for the first time in history. He spent five years with the Indonesian national teams.
Now, Shin Tae Yong is embarking on a new adventure at the club level with Persija. During his coaching career back home, he achieved great success with Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, leading the club to win the 2010 AFC Champions League.
According to Suara newspaper, although the specific figure at Persija has not been disclosed, based on his previous salary with the Indonesian national team, the total cost (including base salary, bonuses, benefits, and salaries for assistants) for Persija to secure coach Shin Tae Yong's signature is estimated at 35-40 billion Rupiah per season (50-57 billion VND).
