Malaysian fans unanimously mentioned Vietnam after missing out on a semi-final spot in the Southeast Asian tournament.

Malaysia's U19 side was eliminated from the 2026 ASEAN U19 tournament after losing to Thailand U19. Subsequently, numerous Malaysian supporters mentioned Vietnam's U19 team, offering encouragement and well-wishes.

On the evening of June 8, Malaysia's U19 team was eliminated from the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 championship after a 2-3 loss to Thailand U19 in the last Group B match. This outcome cost the 'Malayan Tigers' the opportunity to reach the semi-finals, as they lost to Vietnam U19 in the competition for the spot reserved for the best runner-up team.

The game was thrilling from the outset, featuring constant exchanges between the two sides. Malaysia's U19 team took the lead through a header by Imran in the 14th minute. However, Thailand's U19 side quickly struck back with goals from Kongsri and a stunning long-range effort from player number 18, turning the score to 2-1.

Just before the first half concluded, Arsyad leveled the score at 2-2 for Malaysia with a skillful finish inside the penalty area. Nevertheless, in the second half, a converted penalty by captain Kongsri in the 80th minute enabled Thailand's U19 team to secure a 3-2 overall victory.

With this loss, Malaysia's U19 team was officially eliminated. Notably, the young Malaysian side was just one goal behind Vietnam's U19 team in goal difference in the race for the best runner-up position. Meanwhile, Vietnam's U19 squad still had to await the outcome of the last Group C match between Australia U19 and Cambodia U19 to determine whether they would secure a semi-final berth.

Following the game, numerous Malaysian supporters brought up Vietnam's U19 team on regional football forums, posting comments of encouragement and congratulations.

One fan shared: "We were so close to securing a spot. Congratulations to Vietnam; we hope you will go far if you make it to the semi-finals."

Another person commented: "Malaysia was just a little unlucky. If Vietnam reaches the semi-finals, make sure to go all the way!"

Another user wrote: "It was only a one-goal difference. Despite the disappointment, I wish the Vietnamese players all the best for the rest of the tournament."

Meanwhile, another fan remarked: "Both Malaysia and Vietnam gave it their all. Congratulations to Vietnam for gaining the upper hand after the group stage."

If Cambodia's U19 team manages a draw or a win against Australia U19 in the last match, Vietnam's U19 team will still be knocked out.

Despite a regretful exit from the tournament, the response from many Malaysian fans reflects a spirit of respect for their rivals and acknowledgment of what Vietnam's U19 team has achieved this year. Should they advance from the group stage as the best runner-up, Coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's squad will continue to bear the hopes of Vietnamese supporters in the semi-finals.
