Malaysian media exclaimed one thing after missing out on a semifinal ticket

Malaysia U19 were on the verge of reaching the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, yet a 2-3 defeat against Thailand U19 in the last round ended their campaign, leaving their national media filled with disappointment.

Malaysian media expressed deep regret as Malaysia U19 lost 2-3 to Thailand U19 in the final Group B match of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, officially saying goodbye to their semifinal dream.

According to Makanbola, this was a "do-or-die" match since both Malaysia and Thailand had won all their first two games. A draw would have given both teams a strong chance to advance as one of the best second-placed teams. However, both sides chose an attacking approach in pursuit of the top spot in the group.

Malaysia U19 entered the match with great confidence and soon surprised everyone by opening the scoring in the 13th minute. However, the advantage for the yellow-shirted team did not last long, as Thailand quickly restored balance just a few minutes later.

An exciting goal chase continued for the remainder of the match. Thailand took the lead twice, while Malaysia showed strong fighting spirit to keep pace. Yet the turning point came in the 80th minute when Thailand U19 were awarded a penalty and successfully converted it to make it 3-2.

In the final minutes, coach Nafuzi Zain's team pushed forward with all their might in search of an equalizer but failed to break through the opponent's defense. The final whistle signaled the official elimination of Malaysia U19 from the tournament.

Malaysian media praised the young players for their courageous performance and for causing Thailand many difficulties, but costly mistakes at crucial moments made the team pay a heavy price. This loss not only cost Malaysia a semifinal spot but also ended their tournament journey amid great regret from the fans.

Meanwhile, the 3-2 victory helped Thailand U19 top Group B and become the second team to reach the semifinals, following Indonesia U19.
