OFFICIAL: Vietnam U19 opponents determined if they reach ASEAN semi-finals

Vietnam U19 already know their potential semi-final rival at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship if they can navigate the tight path.

The Vietnam U19 team must still wait until the final matchday of Group C to find out whether they can secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship or not. The ticket for the best runner-up among groups has not yet been determined and will depend entirely on the outcome of the clash between Australia U19 and Cambodia U19 at 8:00 PM tonight (June 9).

Earlier, in the final Group B match held on the evening of June 8, Malaysia U19 lost to Thailand U19 with a score of 2-3. This result allowed Thailand U19 to win all three matches, topping Group B with a perfect 9 points, thereby officially securing their place in the semi-finals.

So far, two teams have been confirmed for the semi-finals: Thailand U19 and Indonesia U19. In the event that Vietnam U19 reach the semi-finals, they will certainly not face their group-stage opponent Indonesia again. As the best runner-up, if Vietnam U19 advance, they will 100% encounter Thailand U19.

However, Vietnam U19 cannot celebrate yet because the Group C situation remains highly unpredictable. Currently, Australia U19 leads the group with 3 points and a +10 goal difference, while Cambodia U19 sits just behind with 3 points and a +3 goal difference. Therefore, the result of the match between these two teams will directly determine the fate of coach Yutaka Ikeuchi's squad.

The most favorable scenario for Vietnam U19 is for Cambodia U19 to lose to Australia. In that case, the young Vietnamese team would become the best runner-up and claim the last semi-final spot. Conversely, Vietnam U19 would be eliminated if Australia draws with Cambodia, as Cambodia would then have 4 points and surpass Vietnam in the runner-up rankings. Another possibility is Cambodia beating Australia, but by a margin of fewer than 6 goals; this result would also not be enough to open the door for the Vietnamese representative.

Meanwhile, Australia U19 only needs a draw or a win to hold the top spot in Group C and advance to the semi-finals, where they are likely to face hosts Indonesia U19. As for Cambodia U19, they must win to continue, as they have no chance of competing for the best runner-up spot. As for Thailand U19, the Group B winners will await the runner-up of Group A or the winner of Group C in the round of the top four teams.
