MU targets a World Cup winner for transfer

Manchester United is emerging as the next potential destination for center-back Cristian Romero during the summer transfer window, given the growing uncertainty surrounding the Argentine international's future at Tottenham.

After a turbulent season, Tottenham is reportedly facing the prospect of losing one of its most crucial defensive pillars.

Romero is said to have lost enthusiasm for continuing his tenure with the North London club, particularly after Spurs endured a disappointing season, only securing their Premier League survival on the final matchday.

The London club is currently entering a rebuilding phase under the guidance of manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, the Italian tactician's squad-building plans could face obstacles if Romero decides to seek new challenges.

In recent months, the 28-year-old center-back has been linked with several top Spanish clubs, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. However, according to Argentine sources, Manchester United is the team making the most concrete moves to bring the 2022 World Cup winner to Old Trafford.

United's manager sees Romero as an ideal option to strengthen the defense as the club prepares to return to the Champions League. If the deal goes through, Romero would have the chance to reunite with his close Argentina teammate Lisandro Martinez.

The Romero-Martinez duo once formed a solid defensive wall for the national team. The two center-backs have played 17 matches together for Argentina, suffering only a single defeat. Both were key figures in the journey to winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, Romero's image among Tottenham fans was significantly tarnished in the final stages of last season.

The Argentine defender was repeatedly involved in controversies over unnecessary bookings. Furthermore, he drew criticism for reportedly planning to return to Argentina while Spurs were fighting desperately for survival. Although Romero later changed his mind and stayed with the club, the wave of opposition from fans has not fully subsided.

If Romero indeed arrives at Old Trafford, it promises to be one of the most noteworthy deals of the summer transfer window, giving United an experienced and composed leader in defense.
