Brazilian star abruptly leaves Vietnam after V.League championship

The journey of Brazilian center-back Hugo Gomes at Hanoi Police Club (CAHN) has officially ended after the 2025/26 V.League season concluded.. On his personal page, the player born in 1995 posted a photo with his family at the airport along with a brief message: "Thank you, Vietnam. We were very happy here." This move is seen as an official farewell to Vietnamese football after nearly two years of association.

According to sources from the Public Security team, Hugo Gomes is no longer in CAHN's personnel plans for the 2026/27 season. The Brazilian center-back's family returned to their home country immediately after the season ended, and he will also not attend the team's victory celebration scheduled for June 10. This is a sign that both sides have reached a decision to part ways after much consideration.

The past season was not very smooth for Hugo Gomes as consecutive injuries significantly affected his form and professional contributions. In the 2025/26 V.League, he played only 14 matches and scored no goals. Notably, the 1.87m tall center-back was not registered to play in the final 8 rounds of the season, when CAHN accelerated in the championship race. This greatly diminished his role in coach Mano Polking's tactical system.

Nevertheless, Hugo Gomes left a strong impression while wearing the CAHN shirt. Joining the team at the start of the 2024/25 season, he quickly became a key anchor in defense. Not only outstanding in tackling and aerial duels, the Brazilian center-back also impressed with a remarkable goal-scoring rate. After 35 appearances across all competitions in his first season, he scored 7 goals, a rare feat for a defender.

During nearly two years wearing the CAHN jersey, Hugo Gomes contributed to a series of memorable achievements of the capital team. He and his teammates won the V.League 2025/26 championship, triumphed in the 2024/25 National Cup and the 2025 Super Cup, and also finished as runners-up in the ASEAN Club Championship.
