John Stones turns down Liverpool and Arsenal to join Inter Milan

The experienced defender is said to have chosen his next destination, declining multiple approaches from top English sides in favor of a switch to the Serie A champions.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the England international has reached an agreement with the reigning Serie A champions and is set to finalize the remaining formalities before his official unveiling.

After leaving Manchester City as a free agent at the end of the 2025-2026 season, Stones quickly became a hot commodity for several clubs. Liverpool were reportedly monitoring the 32-year-old's situation closely to add experience to their defense, while Arsenal and Chelsea also expressed interest. Additionally, Juventus had entered the race to sign the former Everton player.

However, it was Inter Milan who emerged victorious in this competition. According to Romano, both parties have agreed on a two-year contract with an option to extend for an additional season. Stones is expected to travel to Milan shortly for a medical before signing the official deal. His salary is estimated at around €4 million per season.

Joining Inter will open a new chapter in Stones' career after a decade at the top level with Manchester City. Since arriving at the Etihad in 2016 at the request of manager Pep Guardiola, the English center-back has made 295 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role in the most successful period in the club's history. He has won six Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and numerous other domestic and international honors with City.

Shortly after leaving City, Stones was still part of the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, where the Three Lions finished in third place. His extensive experience and composure in big matches are expected to make him a quality addition to Inter's defense.

Stones' arrival is also seen as a sign that Inter may end their pursuit of Tottenham center-back Cristian Romero. The Milan club is likely to prioritize placing their trust in the English star, who is about to test himself in Serie A for the first time after spending his entire career in English football.
