Group A Preview of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup: Beware of the 'India Unknown'

Group A of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup promises an unpredictable race, as host Indonesia is not completely dominant over the rest. Malaysia, Singapore, and India could all become notable variables in the competition for the top spot.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup runs from September 24 to October 3, falling entirely within the FIFA Days calendar. Therefore, teams can call up their best players, including stars playing abroad or those not released by their clubs for the ongoing AFF Cup 2026.

Group A of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is considered balanced and highly competitive, as the gap between the four teams in the FIFA rankings is not too large. Host Indonesia (ranked 118) has a slightly stronger squad, but Malaysia (ranked 136), Singapore (ranked 148), and guest team India (ranked 138) each have their own reasons to spring surprises.

Indonesia: The Top Contender

As the host nation and the highest-ranked team in the group, Indonesia is seen as the leading candidate for the top spot and a direct ticket to the final.

In the ongoing AFF Cup 2026, Indonesia is missing around 13 well-known mixed-heritage players who are currently playing in Europe, as the tournament is not on the FIFA Days calendar. Among them are goalkeeper Maarten Paes of Ajax, defenders Kevin Diks of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Calvin Verdonk of Lille, Jay Idzes of Sassuolo, midfielder Joey Pelupessy of Lommel, and striker Ole Romeny of Fortuna Sittard.

Coach John Herdman will be able to recall most of those players for the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup. This addition will significantly boost Indonesia's squad strength, especially in defense, ball distribution, and attacking speed.

If they can integrate well the stars returning from Europe with the group playing at the AFF Cup, such as Thom Haye and young talent Mitchell Baker, Indonesia will have a squad with depth and quality slightly above the rest, making them the highest-rated team and thus well-positioned to compete for the top spot in Group A.

Malaysia: A Challenge from Stability

Malaysia is one of the most experienced teams in the region and is considered capable of competing for the top spot in Group A. The Harimau Malaya often cause difficulties with their physical style, rapid transition play, and direct attacking moves.

The current Malaysia squad at the AFF Cup 2026 is not their strongest lineup. Since the tournament is outside the FIFA Days and coincides with clubs preparing for the new season, many key domestic players were not released by their clubs. Interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe has therefore given opportunities to many young players and new faces, while notable names like Arif Aiman and goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi are absent.

Singapore: An Annoying Obstacle

The Lions are showing significant progress under coach Gavin Lee, especially in organization, maintaining defensive shape, and composure in difficult moments. Singapore's most notable achievement is qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup. They topped their qualifying group with 14 points from four wins and two draws. This is the first time Singapore has qualified through the preliminary rounds to compete in Asia's biggest tournament, rather than as hosts.

India: A Potential Surprise Package

As a guest team from South Asia, India is seen as a notable unknown in Group A. Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter once described Indian football as a "sleeping giant." That phrase becomes even more interesting given the national team's nickname, the Blue Tigers. With the resources of a nation of over a billion people, India has long been expected to become an Asian football powerhouse, though that potential has yet to translate into consistent results.

Nevertheless, the Blue Tigers have shown they can produce unexpected results. At the 2019 Asian Cup in the UAE, India made a huge impact by beating Thailand 4-1 with fast and effective football. That victory serves as a reminder that the South Asian team can explode when they leverage their strengths in physicality, duels, and direct attacks.

India's recent form has not been convincing. Their two encounters with Singapore in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers provide the clearest reference: they drew 1-1 away before losing 2-1 in the return leg. India is predicted to be an unpredictable opponent capable of completely turning the tables in Group A of the first division.

Group A Predictions

Indonesia remains the strongest candidate for the top spot, thanks to home advantage, the highest FIFA ranking in the group, and superior squad depth. If they can call up all their Europe-based players, Tim Garuda will have a significantly stronger core than the squad currently playing in the 2026 ASEAN Championship.

The competition behind Indonesia is harder to predict. India lacks consistency, but their very unpredictability and distinct playing style make the Blue Tigers the biggest wildcard. Their physical foundation, dueling ability, and experience against Southeast Asian teams could help the guest team spring a surprise and secure second place.

Malaysia has many quality key players and will be significantly stronger when the FIFA Days begin. However, the Harimau Malaya still need to prove their stability after fluctuations in squad and coaching staff. If they fail to capitalize on matches against India and Singapore, they could pay the price in a group where the technical gap is not large.

Singapore is the lowest-ranked team in FIFA but is not an easy opponent. Coach Gavin Lee's side is well-organized and has achieved positive results against India. However, limitations in depth and individual quality could make it difficult for them in a prolonged competition against the other three teams.
