Why did Chelsea break the rule and quickly close the Danny Welbeck deal?

At 35, Danny Welbeck seems inconsistent with Chelsea's transfer policy. However, Xabi Alonso may see in the English striker the values that the young squad at Stamford Bridge still lacks.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and journalist David Ornstein, Chelsea is finalizing the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton. The Amex Stadium owners have allowed the 35-year-old striker to undergo a medical before the end of the week.

If all procedures go smoothly, Welbeck will fly to Hong Kong to join Chelsea. The two sides have reached an agreement in principle on a two-year contract.

This is an unusual choice when compared to Chelsea's recruitment policy pursued in recent years. The London club mainly invests in young players, with high development potential and the ability to increase value in the future.

Meanwhile, Welbeck is 35 years old, has almost no resale value, and is difficult to become the core of a long-term plan. Therefore, the question is not only about the experience of the former Man United striker, but also what professional values make Chelsea and coach Xabi Alonso willing to go against the familiar trajectory?

A type of striker Chelsea still lacks

In an era where many strikers like to drop deep to receive the ball or operate as a number 10, the English player still often stays high, pinning opposing defenders and ready to proactively sprint behind the defense to receive through balls.

Welbeck doesn't need to touch the ball constantly to make an impact. His most important job is to occupy dangerous areas and appear at the end of attacks. In the 2025/26 season, Welbeck scored 13 goals in the Premier League. Only three English players had a better record. That shows Chelsea is not simply signing an experienced player, but a striker still capable of making a difference in the box.

Revival under Hurzeler

Welbeck joined Brighton from Watford in 2020. After 201 appearances, he scored 51 goals and contributed 18 assists. Including his spells at Man United, Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford, and Brighton, the English striker has played 400 Premier League matches, scoring 90 goals.

Notably, one of Welbeck's most effective periods came when he was already past his prime. Since Fabian Hurzeler took over Brighton two years ago, Welbeck has scored 25 goals in 76 matches. This tally is just two goals short of the number he scored in 112 appearances for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger.

"He not only scores goals but also has great physical condition, connects well with teammates, and creates cohesion for the whole team. He can help any team in the world, including the England national team,", Hurzeler commented after Welbeck scored a brace to help Brighton beat Liverpool 2-1 in March.

Value beyond goals

What makes Welbeck attractive to Chelsea is not just his professional skills. When Hurzeler took his first job in the Premier League at age 33, he needed experienced players to support the building of the dressing room. Welbeck quickly became one of the most influential figures. Hurzeler and many players also frequently praised his professionalism and ability to inspire.

This could be a particularly important quality for Xabi Alonso. The Spanish coach is taking over a young Chelsea squad, full of talent but still needing experienced players to maintain standards in training and matches.

Welbeck has won titles with Man United, competed for a place at Arsenal, suffered many injuries, and then rebuilt his career at Brighton. He understands how to maintain a professional attitude whether he starts, comes off the bench, or is substituted.

During his time at Brighton, Welbeck had 52 substitute appearances and was substituted off 80 times. He is not a player who demands the team build its play around him, but he is always ready to fulfill his assigned role.

After a win against Newcastle last season, Hurzeler once asked the Brighton players to learn from Welbeck's defensive skills and spirit.

"I will cut all the sprints and Danny's defensive work for the players to see,", Hurzeler said in the dressing room.

Not just to compete with Delap

Welbeck's arrival could affect Liam Delap's position in the first team. However, Chelsea does not necessarily bring the veteran striker in to completely replace the 23-year-old.

Delap represents the future, while Welbeck brings certainty in the present. One needs more time to develop, while the other already knows how to make an impact in the Premier League.

Welbeck can also help young strikers learn how to make runs, attack the far post, time their infiltration into the box, and use their body against strong defenders.

Alonso does not need to build the attack around Welbeck. He just needs the English player to appear at the right moment, score important goals, maintain intensity, and help stabilize the dressing room.

Chelsea is the opponent Welbeck has scored the most goals against in the Premier League. Now, instead of continuing to try to stop this striker, the London club is preparing to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
