Al Nassr is grappling with a major financial crisis as its debt has ballooned to over 800 million riyals, putting a halt to the team's plans to bolster their roster, including those of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Following their Saudi Pro League 2025/26 championship, Al Nassr headed into the summer aiming to further reinforce their lineup. But rather than unveiling high-profile signings early, the Riyadh-based club now finds itself tackling a massive debt load.
Per Al-Riyadiyah, Al Nassr's total debt has now surpassed 800 million riyals, roughly 182 million euros. The bulk of this debt is reportedly due to financial decisions and expenditures from the previous season.
This situation has compelled the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), Al Nassr's majority shareholder, to roll out a range of emergency actions. The management's financial powers have been curtailed, and any new player or coach signing must be backed by concrete funding from sponsorship or the club's own generated income.
A source close to the PIF has confirmed: "There will be no new signings unless the management can generate its own cash flow from the club's revenue."
Thus, Al Nassr is not facing a ban transfer from FIFA as earlier rumors on social media suggested. The club can still negotiate, but cannot complete any deals unless they can demonstrate solvency. Additionally, Al Nassr is under close financial scrutiny by the Saudi Pro League.
PIF intends to engage independent financial, commercial, and legal advisors to boost revenue, cut expenses, and chart a course to rescue Al Nassr from the crisis. Two investment proposals for the club are also under review, with a partial share sale being the preferred option.
Financial difficulties have directly impacted the plans transfer. Al Nassr has advanced in the pursuit of Mallorca's Samu Costa, but an announcement is still pending. Nonetheless, agent Ulisses Santos insists that the paperwork is moving forward and the Portuguese midfielder will report to the training camp once the final formalities are concluded.
As the new season kicks off on August 13, Al Nassr must urgently generate revenue if they hope to reinforce their squad and retain a roster capable of defending their championship.
