Is the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup being disrupted again by India's national team?

India's commitment to a friendly with Brazil on October 3 has raised questions about their involvement in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.

On July 30, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced that Brazil's men's national team will play an international friendly against India on October 3, 2026, in Kolkata.

Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion, is the most accomplished men's team in football history. India hosting the Seleção at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan will create one of the biggest matches in the country's football history.

This will also be the highest-ranked opponent India has faced since the FIFA World Rankings were introduced in 1992, as Brazil is currently ranked 5th in the world.

Brazilian football's legacy has inspired generations of players worldwide, including millions of passionate fans in India. This South Asian nation is known for having one of the largest Brazilian fan communities outside of Brazil.

AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan said: "Welcoming a team of Brazil's stature to our country is a special moment and will surely become a memorable milestone in Indian football history."

Subrata Paul, Director of National Teams, commented: "For the national team players, this is not just another match. It is a rare chance to measure themselves against one of the greatest footballing nations the sport has ever known. Such experiences will help the players grow, inspire them to dream bigger goals, and leave lasting memories throughout their careers."

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup will be held during the FIFA Days window from September 24 to October 3. As announced by FIFA, the tournament is divided into two divisions: Division 1 and Division 2. Division 1 matches will be played in Indonesia, while Division 2 will be hosted in Hong Kong (China).

Vietnam is placed in Group B of Division 1 alongside Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines. Group A of Division 1 consists of Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Singapore.

In Division 2, Group A includes Hong Kong (China), Myanmar, and Brunei; Group B comprises Cambodia, Laos, and Timor-Leste.

The AIFF's prioritization of the friendly against Brazil also raises questions about India's participation in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.
