Jose Mourinho is creating a 'time bomb' at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho is applying his familiar formula at Real Madrid: building an experienced, expensive squad capable of winning titles immediately. However, the issue lies in the legacy he leaves behind after his departure.

Mourinho returns to the Bernabeu with his usual pragmatic strategy, tasked with reviving Real Madrid after a chaotic 2025/26 season on multiple fronts. On the pitch, the Spanish royal club was left behind by Barcelona. In the dressing room, big egos caused the team to gradually lose control.

The Portuguese coach is renowned for his man-management skills, but also has a history of heavy spending and leaving an inflated squad for his successor. The Champions League Champions League title with Inter Milan in 2010 was a memorable achievement, but Mourinho left the Giuseppe Meazza with an expensive squad, most of whom were already or soon to be over 30.

The same thing happened during his two spells at Chelsea. When he left Manchester United, Mourinho also left behind expensive signings that failed to meet expectations, notably Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku.

Mourinho's philosophy is very clear: prioritize players who can help the team win immediately, even if it means sacrificing long-term plans.

After being given control of transfer operations at Real Madrid, Mourinho quickly targeted Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, and Bernardo Silva. Rodri is reportedly the next name, while Antonio Rudiger was kept despite previously being likely to leave on a free transfer.

Four of the five players mentioned above are already 30 or older. Konate is 27 but entering his peak years. These are all choices that offer professional assurance, but with little room for further development and relatively low resale value.

In recent years, Real Madrid has limited large transfer fees. Since the start of the decade, the Bernabeu club has only spent over €65 million on two players: Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouameni. Therefore, the investment of over €100 million for Cucurella and Rodri is seen as a significant change.

This figure does not include wages. The compensation package for Rodri alone is expected to have a total value equivalent to the roughly €50 million fee Real Madrid must pay Manchester City.

To fund his spending plan, Mourinho could offload a series of young players such as Alvaro Carreras, Cesar Palacios, Eduardo Camavinga, Tchouameni, and Goncalo Garcia. Rodrygo's future is also in question, while Vinicius Junior's stay is uncertain due to prolonged contract negotiations.

If Franco Mastantuono and Endrick are loaned out, Real Madrid risks losing nearly half of their first-team players under 27 to make room for experienced faces.

Yan Diomande appears to be the rare investment for the future. However, the fee of €135 million, nearly four times the estimated transfer value of the 19-year-old player, also turns this deal into a huge gamble.

Real Madrid hired Mourinho to win immediately, and history shows he can certainly fulfill that task. The bigger question is what kind of squad the royal club will inherit when the veteran tactician leaves the Bernabeu once again.
