In the final match of the 2026 World Cup, Argentina lost to Spain after extra time, ending their title defense. After the final whistle, several La Albiceleste players lost their composure, leading to FIFA opening disciplinary proceedings. Notably, six Argentina players are reportedly at risk of being banned from the 2030 World Cup, although FIFA has not yet issued a final ruling.

According to official statements, Nahuel Molina is under investigation for two counts of assault and one unsportsmanlike conduct after being filmed rushing into a confrontation with Spain captain Rodri. Meanwhile, Leandro Paredes is accused of three counts of assault for choking Eric Garcia and pushing Gavi during the chaos. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala is also under investigation following a collision with Dani Olmo.

FIFA stated: "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has received a report from the appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor regarding incidents that occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final... Following the recommendations in the report, FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings for potential violations of Article 14, paragraph 1(i) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (assault) against Argentina players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, and Argentina official Roberto Ayala."

The body also confirmed: "FIFA has also opened disciplinary proceedings for potential violations of Article 14, paragraph 1(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (unsportsmanlike conduct) against Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and Spain player Pablo Martín Páez Gavira (Gavi)." This is the first time FIFA has publicly confirmed investigations related to the post-final incidents.

In parallel, FIFA has opened another case regarding the banner "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas" raised by Argentina players after their victory over England in the semi-final. The message, which translates to "The Malvinas (Falklands) Islands belong to Argentina," is considered politically sensitive.

According to The Sun, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martinez, and Giovani Lo Celso are the three players recorded holding the banner, alongside Molina, Thiago Almada, and Leandro Paredes. The British newspaper suggests all six names could face a ban that would affect the 2030 World Cup. Although FIFA has not yet confirmed any suspension, this possibility is very real. Since Argentina is automatically qualified as co-hosts and does not need to play qualifiers, the 2030 World Cup could well be the first tournament where such sanctions are enforced if they are imposed.
