ASEAN Cup 2026 Group Stage Ranking Criteria

What are the ranking criteria for the ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage? How did the Vietnam national team find themselves in a difficult position after a disappointing draw against Singapore at My Dinh?

The ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage uses the familiar points system: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. After all group matches are completed, rankings are determined based on the total points earned.

In the event that two or more teams are tied on points, the organizing committee will apply the following criteria in order of priority to determine the rankings:

1. Head-to-head results in ASEAN Cup 2026

Points earned in matches between the tied teams.

Goal difference in head-to-head matches.

Goals scored in head-to-head matches.

If after these three criteria the teams still cannot be separated, the organizing committee will reapply the same three criteria but only to the subset of teams still tied. If no result is reached, the next criteria will be used.

2. Overall group goal difference

The team with a better goal difference across all group matches will be ranked higher.

3. Total goals scored

If the goal difference is still equal, the team that scored more goals throughout the group stage will have the advantage.

4. Penalty shootout

This criterion is only applied if two tied teams meet in the final group match and end with equal statistics. In that case, they will determine the ranking via a penalty shootout immediately after the match.

5. Fair-play points

If the ranking still cannot be determined, the organizing committee will consider disciplinary points (fair-play). The team with fewer deduction points will be ranked higher, calculated as follows:

Yellow card: minus 1 point.

Indirect red card (two yellow cards): minus 3 points.

Direct red card: minus 4 points.

Yellow card and direct red card in the same match: minus 5 points.

In a single match, each player or coaching staff member is only subject to the highest deduction level.

6. Drawing of lots

If all the above criteria still fail to determine the ranking, the organizing committee will conduct a draw to decide the higher-ranked team.

With this ranking system, head-to-head performance is given the highest priority over goal difference. This means that results in direct matches between competing teams will play a decisive role in the opportunity to reach the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinals.

The current situation of the Vietnam national team

The ranking criteria also put the Vietnam national team in a difficult position after the draw with Singapore. Coach Kim Sang Sik's team currently has only 4 points, trailing Singapore (7 points, having played all 3 matches) and Indonesia (6 points, with 2 games remaining). Despite having a goal difference of +7, Vietnam cannot take advantage of this because according to the rules, the most important factor is still points.

If Vietnam loses to Indonesia in the next match, they will have at most 7 points after facing Cambodia. Meanwhile, Indonesia would quickly secure a semifinal spot with 9 points, and Singapore would only need one more point against Indonesia to reach 8 points, meaning Vietnam would be eliminated even if they beat Cambodia by a large margin. Therefore, the match against Indonesia is almost an "early final." Only a victory can help Vietnam regain control of their own destiny in the race for the semifinals, while goal difference only matters if teams finish the group stage with the same number of points.

In the event of a draw with Indonesia, Vietnam would also not be in control of their own fate because if in the final round, Singapore also draws with Indonesia but scores more goals, then they would surpass Vietnam to claim a spot in the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinals.
