The match between the Vietnam national futsal team and Russia at 6:00 PM on August 1st is a highly anticipated opening match at the 2026 Intercontinental Championship Friendly Tournament – Thailand. It is seen as a major test for coach Diego Raul Giustozzi and his squad, as Russia boasts a well-developed futsal system and numerous players with extensive international experience.
Speaking before the tournament, Coach Diego Raul Giustozzi revealed that the Vietnam futsal team had only four official training sessions after the conclusion of the 2026 HDBank National Futsal Championship. Given the limited time, the coaching staff focused on reinforcing individual tactics, adjusting certain operational strategies, and mentally preparing the players for the competition.
On the other side, the Russian futsal team is led by Georgian coach Beso Zoidze, a manager who has worked with top Russian clubs like Spartak Moscow and MFC KPRF. The European side has brought a squad of three goalkeepers and 15 outfield players to Thailand, promising to pose a major challenge in terms of speed, physical strength, and attacking organization.
This year's tournament features five teams: Thailand, Russia, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and Vietnam, competing in a single round-robin format to determine the final standings. After facing Russia, the Vietnam futsal team will successively take on New Zealand, Afghanistan, and host Thailand. This provides coach Giustozzi with a valuable opportunity to test his squad, evaluate new players, and fine-tune the team for upcoming international objectives.
