ASEAN Cup 2026: 'Real Test' at Rajamangala Stadium

According to a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, after two consecutive wins against Myanmar and Laos (2-1 and 4-0 respectively), the Malaysian team will face their biggest challenge in Group B when they visit Thailand at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok on the evening of August 1.

According to Tan Cheng Hoe, the clash with one of the strongest teams in the region will help the coaching staff better assess the current level of a squad undergoing transition, blending young players with experienced faces.

"This is certainly a real test to evaluate the team and see if the players can withstand pressure. I see this match as an opportunity to assess the players' performance, rather than just focusing on winning, because we still don't know our true level," said Tan Cheng Hoe.

The 58-year-old coach affirmed that he will accept any result, because the match against Thailand is a good opportunity for young players to test their abilities while playing alongside experienced seniors.

Despite a big win over Laos in the previous match, Malaysia's performance still revealed some limitations. The "Malayan Tigers" struggled to break through the opponent's organized defense in the first half, before finding a better rhythm after the halftime break.

Tan Cheng Hoe believes that the ability to handle situations and find solutions on the pitch will be particularly important in the clash against Thailand, a team rated higher and with home advantage.

The packed schedule is also posing a physical challenge for the Malaysian coaching staff. Having to play three matches in a week has made the players' fitness a top concern.

"We know most of the players are struggling with fitness. The team has to play three matches in just one week, so the coaching staff needs to assess each player's injury status, physical condition, and recovery ability to prepare best for a strong opponent like Thailand," Tan Cheng Hoe shared.

Although acknowledging that Thailand is rated higher, the Malaysian tactician still sees this as an opportunity for his players to understand the demands of playing at the highest level of Southeast Asian football.

He emphasized that past statistics are for reference only, while the coaching staff's task is to prepare the team as best as possible. According to Tan Cheng Hoe, even with outstanding players, a team cannot be certain of victory.

Thailand is a familiar opponent for Tan Cheng Hoe. During his first stint as Malaysia's head coach from 2017-2022, he maintained an unbeaten record against the team nicknamed "War Elephants."

However, Tan Cheng Hoe affirmed that the current goal is not to extend his personal unbeaten streak against Thailand. What he cares about more is determining whether the current Malaysian squad has enough courage, fitness, and adaptability to meet the requirements when facing one of the traditional powers of Southeast Asian football.
