Indonesian defender acknowledges: 'The level of play between Vietnam and Indonesia is comparable.'

Defender Shayne Pattynama asserts that the Indonesian national team is brimming with confidence ahead of their match against Vietnam at Pakansari Stadium on August 3, 2026.

The Indonesian team currently has 6 points from two matches in Group A of the 2026 ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup), after a 3-0 victory over Timor Leste.

Meanwhile, Vietnam heads to Bogor following a 0-0 draw against Singapore at My Dinh Stadium on July 31, 2026.

Pattynama stated that Indonesia is adopting a game-by-game mentality. He believes the victory over Timor Leste provided many positive signals, but the squad still has aspects to work on.

"As I mentioned earlier, we are solely focused on each game. Now that the last match is behind us, we have plenty of positives to reflect on. However, there are still some moments we need to review to understand what we must improve," Pattynama remarked.

Indonesia has begun their group stage campaign flawlessly, securing all 6 points from two consecutive victories.

On the flip side, Vietnam arrives in Bogor after failing to secure all three points in their last match. Coach Kim Sang Sik's side drew 0-0 with Singapore at My Dinh Stadium on July 31.

Pattynama acknowledges that Vietnam is among the strongest teams in Southeast Asia. Nevertheless, he believes Indonesia has the capability to compete on equal footing and secure a favorable outcome.

"We are aware that Vietnam is a very strong team. They play well and are very confident. We fully recognize that. But we also have faith in our own playing style and in what we can accomplish," Pattynama confessed.

Indonesia's confidence was further boosted by the 3-0 victory over Timor Leste. Pattynama opened the scoring himself, with Thom Haye and Mitchell Baker adding two more goals.

"We are very confident heading into the next match against Vietnam and we will demonstrate what we are capable of. We are playing at home, and when we play at home, we know exactly what we need to do," Pattynama added.

The Persija Jakarta player believes the victory over Timor Leste gave a major psychological boost. Not only did they secure three points, but Indonesia also kept a clean sheet, which further boosted the team's confidence.

"I believe this win is very important. Furthermore, we kept a clean sheet, and that gives the entire team a great deal of confidence. This is a crucial factor," Pattynama stated.

Pattynama also confirmed that the team has fully turned their attention to the clash with Vietnam. In his view, this will be a showdown between two teams of equal caliber.

"We are really looking forward to a match like this, between two teams of comparable quality. Of course, I'm not saying Timor Leste lacks quality, but you understand what I'm saying. Games like these are always thrilling," Pattynama further remarked.

He concluded: "We are ready for the next match. The entire team will get back to training because the schedule is very packed. But overall, we are prepared."

Shayne Pattynama (born August 11, 1998 in Lelystad, Netherlands) is a left-back currently playing for Persija Jakarta and the Indonesian national team. He developed through the youth systems of SV Lelystad '67, Ajax, and Jong Utrecht, embarking on his professional career at Jong Utrecht.
