Man City suffered a penalty shootout defeat against Inter Milan in a pre-season friendly ahead of the new campaign.

Manchester City fell to Inter Milan 1-3 in the penalty shootout, thus failing to claim the Asahi Super Dry Trophy during the exhibition game in Hong Kong (China).

This was Enzo Maresca's first match as Manchester City's head coach after taking over from Pep Guardiola. However, the Italian manager was without several key players as they were still resting following the World Cup.

One notable absentee was Elliot Anderson, the £116 million signing from Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, young talent Jeremy Monga, recruited from Leicester City during the summer transfer window, was only on the bench and did not get any playing time.

Man City opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Divin Mubamba tapped in from close range after a cross from Antoine Semenyo. However, just six minutes later, experienced center-back Benjamin Pavard equalized for Inter Milan following a defensive clearance from a corner kick that wasn't fully dealt with by Man City's backline.

After a fairly balanced first half, Man City controlled the majority of the second half but could not find a decisive goal. Captain Phil Foden continued to deliver a lackluster performance following a difficult previous season. Nevertheless, the new season has not yet started, and the English player still has plenty of time to regain his form, especially after recently signing a new contract with the Etihad club.

The two teams went straight to a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of play, with no extra time. For Man City, only Claudio Echeverri converted his spot-kick, while Inter Milan scored three penalties, with Matteo Lavelli taking the decisive shot that secured the victory.

Both teams likely took little from this match, as Inter Milan made a full 11-player substitution, while Man City made eight changes. However, coach Maresca would surely be pleased with Ryan McAidoo's performance. The 18-year-old forward came on in the second half and constantly threatened down the right flank.

Given his display, McAidoo is likely to attract interest from clubs looking to loan him, although Man City might also consider keeping the young talent in the first team for the upcoming season.
