Overseas Vietnamese midfielder Julien Nguyễn is currently at Hải Phòng FC for a trial ahead of the new season. If he impresses the coaching staff, the player born in 2006 could become a notable new recruit for the port city team.
According to information from the Hải Phòng Football fanpage, overseas Vietnamese midfielder Julien Nguyễn is trialing at Hải Phòng Club. This is seen as a new opportunity for the 19-year-old player after a period of seeking a club in Vietnam, but he was unsuccessful at the PVF-CAND Youth Club earlier this year.
Julien Nguyễn was born in 2006 in Canada to a family where both parents are Vietnamese. The 1.82m tall midfielder plays as a defensive midfielder and has an ideal physique, good tackling ability, and a modern style of play in the central area.
In the summer of 2023, Julien Nguyễn moved to Spain to develop his career. After training at the Rayo Vallecano academy, he played for the U19 team of Fuenlabrada in the Juvenil de Honor. This is an environment that brings together many prestigious academies such as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, helping the Vietnamese-origin midfielder gain more experience at a high level.
However, after finishing his contract with Fuenlabrada, Julien Nguyễn encountered work permit issues and was forced to return to Canada. At the beginning of 2026, the player returned to Vietnam to trial at the PVF-CAND Youth Club, but the two sides could not agree on terms during negotiations, so the deal fell through.
Not giving up on his goal of playing in his homeland, Julien Nguyễn returned to Vietnam again, and this time his destination is Hải Phòng FC. If he meets the professional requirements of coach Đặng Văn Thành, the 19-year-old midfielder will have the opportunity to play in the V.League for the first time, simultaneously opening an important turning point in his career.
Julien Nguyễn himself has repeatedly expressed his desire to contribute to Vietnamese football. The player born in 2006 once revealed that he is completing the procedures to apply for Vietnamese citizenship and hopes to soon be eligible to play for the national team at various levels in the future.
If they successfully recruit Julien Nguyễn, Hải Phòng will continue to increase the presence of overseas Vietnamese players in their squad. Currently, the port city team has Camilo Minh, an overseas Vietnamese midfielder from Canada who made a strong impression last season.
The arrival of Camilo Minh has brought many positive signals to Hải Phòng, and if Julien Nguyễn passes his trial period, the port city team will have another quality option in midfield.
