Indonesia vs. Vietnam: A Challenge at Pakansari

Pakansari is considered one of the most intimidating stadiums in Southeast Asia. With stands built close to the pitch, it always creates immense pressure on visiting teams. The passionate atmosphere from Indonesian fans often turns Pakansari into a "cauldron".

For Vietnam, this stadium is associated with many unpleasant memories from the past. At the 2018 Asian Games, the Vietnam Olympic team was eliminated in the semifinals after a 1-3 loss to South Korea. Also at Pakansari, in the bronze medal match against the UAE, after a 1-1 draw, Coach Park Hang-seo's Vietnam Olympic team lost 3-4 on penalties.

Statistics also make this away trip even harder for Vietnam. In the history of the ASEAN Cup, the Golden Stars have never won when playing on Indonesian soil.

The situation in Group A has put Coach Kim Sang-sik's side in a difficult position, as Vietnam has dropped to third place after a draw with Singapore at My Dinh Stadium. Singapore leads the group with 7 points, Indonesia is second with 6 points, and Vietnam is temporarily third with 4 points.

At the 2026 ASEAN Cup, Indonesia boasts many tall, fast, and technically skilled players. The midfield is considered Indonesia's strongest area, notably Dutch-born star midfielder Thom Haye. This midfielder is the "conductor" of Indonesia's tactical system. He is excellent at ball-winning and also plays a key role in creating chances for the forwards. Thom Haye performed exceptionally well in Indonesia's 3-0 win over Vietnam in the second leg of the second round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March 2024.
