Shea Lacey will serve as the "backup number 10" for Bruno at Manchester United.

The impressive displays against Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid are opening up encouraging indications about Shea Lacey's prospects for competing for a place in MU's senior squad this season.

With a congested schedule across various competitions, manager Michael Carrick urgently needs a reliable option to share the workload with captain Bruno Fernandes.

Growing through a challenging season

Lacey, aged 19, made his first-team debut for MU last December when he came off the bench in a 1-2 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League. He then made three more appearances in different competitions before things stalled.

In the FA Cup match against Brighton earlier this year, Lacey received a red card and soon after suffered a calf injury. The injury kept the young talent sidelined for an extended period, and he only returned in the final round of last season's Premier League, when Carrick gave him a few minutes in the rematch against Brighton.

The pre-season period is always when coaches assess the squad and provide opportunities for young players. Carrick decided to bring Lacey on MU's summer tour to evaluate whether this midfielder was ready for the first team.

And Lacey repaid that trust. After scoring in the 5-0 victory over Rosenborg, he continued to impress in the 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid. Although he did not directly score or provide an assist, Lacey left a significant mark by winning a penalty that allowed Bryan Mbeumo to equalize, while also contributing defensively with several precise tackles, helping to ease the pressure from the Spanish side. Therefore, the praise Carrick gave his player after the match was fully deserved.

A backup option for Bruno Fernandes

Lacey's promotion to the first team at the end of last year stemmed from MU's personnel needs, as Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo returned to serve their national teams at the AFCON. Although he only made 10 appearances in the matchday squad, that period helped the young midfielder gain his first experiences at the top level.

Lacey's key strength is his versatility. He can play on the right wing or take on the number 10 role. In the match against Atletico Madrid, Carrick positioned Lacey just behind striker Mbeumo. With his speed, agile movement, and forward-thinking play, the 19-year-old midfielder repeatedly created space for his teammates to exploit. Although he only played 73 minutes, that performance was enough to generate high expectations.

If he is kept in the first team as Carrick hinted after the match, Lacey will likely serve as a backup for Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 position. This is also something MU desperately needs as the team will compete on multiple fronts, including the Champions League. One cannot expect a Bruno Fernandes, who is over 30, to continuously grind through the entire season.

The likelihood of MU spending more money to sign another attacking midfielder is also low, after already investing up to £83 million on two new midfield signings, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

What Carrick expects from Lacey now is no longer just appearances off the bench, but maturity to be ready to start whenever the team needs him. If he maintains his form for the remainder of the 2026 summer tour, the 19-year-old midfielder has a real chance to stay at Old Trafford rather than being sent out on loan in the first half of the season. After a season full of upheavals, this is the right time for Lacey to prove he is capable of becoming a genuine member of MU's first team, rather than just appearing as a stopgap solution.
