The Cambodian national team has a chance to secure their first three points in the 2026 ASEAN Cup when they host Timor-Leste at home.

Both Cambodia and Timor-Leste have already lost all chances to advance to the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN Cup. Therefore, the match at Morodok Techo Stadium holds significant meaning for both sides.

Cambodia enters the match with a record of zero points after two games, having lost both. Coach Koji Gyotoku's team suffered a 1-2 defeat to Singapore and then a heavy 1-5 loss away to Indonesia.

Against Singapore, they nearly secured a draw only to lose it in the 90+11th minute after Ilhan Fandi's moment of brilliance.

On the other hand, Timor-Leste has had an even tougher tournament. After three matches, they have lost all—0-7 to Vietnam, 0-2 to Singapore, and 0-3 to Indonesia—without scoring a single goal while conceding 12. Their attack is stagnant, and their defense keeps making mistakes, making Timor-Leste the worst-performing team in Group A.

This is seen as the best opportunity for Cambodia to claim all three points. Historical head-to-head records favor Cambodia. Statistics show that Cambodia has won 7 matches, drawn 2, and lost only 1 against Timor-Leste. Cambodia's sole defeat was a 1-5 loss to Timor-Leste in 2012.

After the loss to Indonesia, Cambodia's coach Koji Gyotoku stated: "We will give our best in the next two matches."

This is the Japanese coach's second consecutive ASEAN Cup with Cambodia. Two years ago, the team made an impression by drawing 2-2 with Malaysia and defeating Timor-Leste. However, after two consecutive tournaments, Cambodia has still failed to advance past the group stage.

Notably, during this period, the Cambodian Football Federation has heavily invested in naturalization policies. Players like Ogawa, Hikaru, Coulibaly, Mirzaev, and Bento were expected to help close the gap with the top Southeast Asian teams.

However, in reality, naturalization has only helped Cambodia improve squad depth without creating a quality difference. Against Indonesia, Cambodia's defense still showed many gaps. Up front, naturalized players have also failed to lead as expected.

A typical example is striker Abdel Kader Coulibaly. After scoring 2 goals in the 2024 ASEAN Cup and being expected to become the main attacking threat, the Ivorian-born forward has yet to score in this year's tournament. Coulibaly's decline reflects a larger issue for Cambodia: the team lacks sharp players to convert chances into goals.

Notably, Cambodia's goal-scoring ability has declined with each ASEAN Cup. In 2022, eight different players scored. By the 2024 ASEAN Cup, that number dropped to six. In this year's tournament, after two matches, only Ouk Sovann has scored for Cambodia.

On Timor-Leste's side, they have surprised this tournament with a new look, as coach Ze Pedro boldly encourages his players to play possession-based football similar to Spain. However, the quality of Timor-Leste's players has not matched the Portuguese coach's philosophy.

Notably, Timor-Leste has 13 players playing abroad, six of them in Europe. Yet with such a squad, they have still failed to make an impact at the 2026 ASEAN Cup. So far, Timor-Leste has only shown moments where their players confidently moved the ball in the opponent's half before conceding goals.

Against Singapore, Timor-Leste had equal possession but lacked attacking ideas, and their forwards were not sharp enough. It is not surprising that Timor-Leste has lost three consecutive matches in the 2026 ASEAN Cup. The match against Cambodia is the last chance for coach Ze Pedro to prove his philosophy.

Meanwhile, Cambodia needs their first win in the 2026 ASEAN Cup to build momentum before a difficult away match against Vietnam on August 7.
