Ronaldo's coach unexpectedly returns to a special role

Rene Meulensteen, the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson and a key figure in Cristiano Ronaldo's development at Manchester United, has unexpectedly returned to football in a brand-new role at Stockport County, marking a fresh start after a long absence.

After spending years away from top European clubs, Rene Meulensteen, the legendary former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson and one of the coaches who helped Cristiano Ronaldo rise to superstardom, has officially returned in an entirely new capacity.

Stockport County has confirmed Meulensteen's appointment as Director of Football Methodology. This marks the first time in the history of the League One club that a position dedicated to building philosophy and development systems has been created.

This decision reflects Stockport's huge ambitions following the 2025/26 season. The Hatters finished third in League One but missed out on promotion after losing the playoff final at Wembley. The club's leadership believes Meulensteen's vast experience will be key to taking the team a step further in their push for the Championship.

According to Stockport's announcement, the Dutch tactician will work closely with the first-team coaching staff to establish a unified football philosophy across the entire club. Additionally, he will directly contribute to youth player development, bridging the academy and the first team, and building a long-term coaching methodology.

A notable detail is that Meulensteen will have the opportunity to work alongside his son, Joppe Meulensteen, who is currently a member of Stockport's coaching staff. This is considered a special milestone in the careers of both father and son.

Sporting director Damien Allen did not hide his expectations for the new Director of Football Methodology. He stated that this is an important milestone in building a modern football structure, emphasizing that Meulensteen possesses a rare profile with experience in developing numerous world-class stars, most notably Cristiano Ronaldo.

Over more than a decade at Manchester United, Meulensteen was regarded as Sir Alex's right-hand man. He had two spells at Old Trafford from 2001 to 2006 and from 2007 to 2013. During this time, the Red Devils won 11 major trophies, including 4 Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.

Beyond contributing to MU's overall success, Meulensteen was renowned as a specialist in individual skill development. He is considered one of the coaches who had a major influence on Ronaldo's evolution during the Portuguese star's explosive years at Old Trafford, helping CR7 gradually become one of the world's best players.

After Sir Alex retired, Meulensteen also left MU. He had a stint managing Fulham, worked at Anzhi Makhachkala, and most recently served as an assistant coach for the Iraq national team at the World Cup.

Although he has not been present at top European clubs, the return of Rene Meulensteen still attracts significant attention.
