Myanmar vs Laos (5:00 PM on August 4): A win to keep hope alive

Myanmar’s encounter with Laos on home soil is a chance for the squad led by Jorn Andersen to claim a full three points, keeping their hopes alive in the race for a ticket to the next round of the ASEAN Cup 2026.

While Laos has already been eliminated after losing all three matches, Myanmar still has a genuine chance to compete for a place in the semifinals.

Opportunity opens up for Myanmar

In Group B of the ASEAN Cup 2026, Thailand leads the standings, and Malaysia also has six points, but coach Tan Cheng Hoe’s team has played one more match. Myanmar sits third with three points after two games. Their direct competitor for the knockout stage is Malaysia. If they beat Laos, Myanmar will rise to six points, level with Malaysia, setting up a decisive final matchday to determine their fate.

Coach Jorn Andersen’s side enters the upcoming match with great confidence following an impressive 4-1 victory over the Philippines. This encouraging performance shows that Myanmar has quickly bounced back from their 1-2 loss to Malaysia in the opening game. After the win against the Philippines, Andersen expressed particular satisfaction with his players' fighting spirit. The Norwegian coach noted that Myanmar maintained the same playing style as in the Malaysia match, but this time they capitalized on opportunities more effectively to secure the victory.

"Today, the players operated the same game plan and created numerous chances. However, unlike the previous match where we wasted opportunities and suffered a 1-2 defeat, this time we knew how to be more clinical and precise in our finishing," Andersen emphasized.

Andersen believes that ball possession is not the decisive factor in success. According to him, Myanmar's strength lies in their fast counter-attacks, exploiting the wings, and quick transitions. Against the Philippines, Myanmar had only about 33% possession but still scored four goals by making excellent use of the chances they created.

Striker Than Paing, who scored a brace in the win over the Philippines, also affirmed that the team never lost faith after the defeat to Malaysia. He said the players all understood that the match against the Philippines was a "must-win" to keep their semifinal hopes alive, and ultimately, they accomplished their mission.

Myanmar's attack, featuring names like Than Paing, Win Naing Tun, and Myat Kaung Khant, has maintained a high scoring rate, although the defense still has many issues to address. Now, Myanmar needs to secure three points to keep their hopes of advancing alive, as well as to build momentum for the final group stage match, which will be the toughest—an away game against Thailand on August 8.

Laos unlikely to cause an upset

On the other hand, Laos has already been eliminated from the ASEAN Cup 2026. Coach Vladica Grujic’s team suffered consecutive losses: 0-5 to Thailand, 0-4 to Malaysia, and 1-4 to the Philippines. They have scored only one goal while conceding 13 times.

After the loss to Malaysia, Coach Grujic admitted that the gap in quality between Laos and the stronger teams in the region remains significant. He stated that Malaysian players are far superior due to their regular participation in domestic professional leagues, while his own players have had fewer opportunities to develop in a professional football environment.

Although Laos created some notable moments, they had no answer to Malaysia's strong attacking power and accepted a 0-4 defeat. Their shaky defense and limited experience often make it difficult for Laos to compete against higher-quality teams.

In this tournament, Laos has brought a young squad, with only one player aged 30 (Viengxay Sidavong), two players aged 26 (Keo-Oudone Souvannasangso and Somlith Sengvanny), while the rest are mostly 23 or younger. Clearly, Laos entered this tournament with the goal of gaining experience and preparing for future regional competitions. Laos faces additional difficulty as center-back Phetdavanh Somsanith is suspended due to a ban. Notably, Somsanith received two red cards during the ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage.

With such a squad, it is very difficult for Laos to achieve a positive result against Myanmar, especially since they have no remaining objectives. Theoretically, Myanmar can fully secure all three points in the upcoming match. The question is how Coach Jorn Andersen's players will perform on the field.
