Indonesia lost to the Vietnam national team due to overconfidence.

Indonesian football expert Aris Budi Sulistyo believes that the poor performance of the Indonesian national team in the 0-3 loss to Vietnam stemmed from overconfidence.

The Indonesian national team unexpectedly lost 0-3 to Vietnam in the third match of Group A of the 2026 AFF Cup at Pakansari Stadium (Bogor) on the evening of August 3, 2026.

Vietnam's three goals were scored by Nguyễn Văn Vĩ (4th minute), Nguyễn Hải Long (15'), and Nguyễn Xuân Son (71'). Indonesia had to accept defeat as they played below their usual level. Despite having more possession, other statistics showed that Vietnam deserved the victory thanks to their effective play and the reasonable tactics of coach Kim Sang Sik.

Football expert Aris Budi Sulistyo assessed that Indonesia did not play as they usually do. According to him, the biggest reason was the overly confident mentality of coach John Herdman's team.

Before this match, Indonesia had held the advantage in recent encounters with the Vietnam national team at home. Indonesia won three and lost only one of the last four meetings, all of which took place in 2024.

According to Aris Budi Sulistyo, that record made Thom Haye and his teammates become complacent and underestimate the Vietnam team, leading to a heavy 0-3 defeat.

"The Indonesian national team did not play as usual, perhaps because they were too confident in the positive results against Vietnam in recent encounters. They became overconfident, while the Vietnam team played more comfortably and won," he told Bola.com on Tuesday.

The former coach of Persik Kediri and Persis Solo also praised the professional quality and composure of the Vietnam national team. According to him, coach Kim Sang Sik's tactic of proactively dropping deep to wait for opportunities and launching quick counterattacks caused Indonesia many difficulties.

"Vietnam organized their defense very disciplined and marked tightly. That made it difficult for Indonesia to build up play. Vietnam's style of play was also more coherent.

All three of Vietnam's goals came from counterattacks. Indonesia's organizational system was not ready to deal with those situations. The Vietnam team easily found space and had superior speed to beat the goalkeeper."

In the final match of Group A, Indonesia will be away to hosts Singapore, while Vietnam will host Cambodia at home.

Indonesia needs a favorable result to secure a spot in the semifinals and must first defeat Singapore.
