UEFA unexpectedly loosens the reins, benefiting a host of stars

By raising the threshold for yellow-card suspensions, UEFA has allowed numerous top players to escape being sidelined for crucial games in the Champions League and other European tournaments next season.

UEFA has officially revised the suspension rules for yellow cards in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, bringing a significant change starting from the 2026/27 season.

According to UEFA's announcement No. 51/2026 sent to member federations on August 4, players and coaching staff members will only be banned for one match after accumulating four yellow cards beginning from the league phase. Previously, the automatic suspension was triggered upon the third yellow card.

UEFA confirmed: “From the first match of the league phase, players and coaching staff members will be suspended for the next game after four yellow cards that do not lead to a red card, as well as after the sixth, eighth, and subsequent milestones.”

Thus, the new suspension cycle now falls on the fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth yellow cards, replacing the previous thresholds of the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth. This is a clear “untying”, especially for defensive midfielders, center-backs, or players who frequently engage in high-intensity duels.

UEFA explained: “The adoption of the new competition format from the 2024/25 season has altered the previous ratio between the number of cards and matches, and has disproportionately increased the risk of suspension due to accumulating too many yellow cards.”

The Champions League and Europa League now feature eight matchdays in the league phase, compared to six in the old group stage. Therefore, maintaining the three-card threshold would have sharply increased the risk of players missing matches. The Conference League still has only six matchdays, but UEFA has applied the same mechanism to avoid inconsistencies when players move between clubs competing in different tournaments during the February registration window.

The new rule only applies from the first match of the league phase. In the qualifying rounds and playoffs, players and coaching staff members are still suspended for one match after collecting three yellow cards, and then continue to face punishment at the fifth, seventh, etc. When entering the league phase, these thresholds are raised to the fourth, sixth, and eighth cards. The regulations regarding red cards remain unchanged.

Yellow cards that have not resulted in a penalty will be cleared after the playoff round and will not carry over to the league phase. Yellow cards will also be cleared after the quarter-finals, and will not carry over to the semi-finals.

With the suspension threshold widened, coaches have more room to use key players in tense matches. However, with the fourth, sixth, and eighth milestones still in place, the calculation of personnel in European competitions may become more intricate.
