Phil Foden unexpectedly nominates himself for a leadership role at Man City.

Phil Foden openly states his wish to become Man City's captain, as the club undergoes a substantial transition on the coaching bench and in the locker room.

Man City is entering a new era under the leadership of coach Enzo Maresca. Moreover, Bernardo Silva, who wore the captain's armband last season, has left Man City during the summer transfer window. Two veteran defenders John Stones and Nathan Ake are also no longer with the club, significantly reducing the group of influential voices in the dressing room.

In that context, Foden does not hide his ambition to become one of the new captains of the team. Speaking before the friendly match against the K-League All Stars in Seoul, the English midfielder affirmed that he has enough experience to step up and take on the responsibility.

“I have been at the club for a very long time and am one of the few players remaining who have been with the team through many seasons. I think this season I can become captain, or at least be part of the leadership group. I look forward to the new responsibility and want to show my leadership ability.”, Foden shared.

Foden came through the Man City academy and made his first-team debut in November 2017. The 2026/27 season will be his 10th at the senior level for the Etihad club.

From a young talent nurtured by Pep Guardiola, Foden has now become one of the most senior players in the team. He was also given the captain's armband in Man City's first friendly match of their Asia tour, where the team drew 1-1 with Inter Milan before losing on penalties.

Not only setting himself the goal of becoming a leader, Foden also revealed that coach Maresca has tasked him with being a role model for young players.

“What the coach wants from me right now is to be a role model for the young players during the tour. I need to train well, work hard, and show the right attitude. That's what I'm trying to do.”. The English star shared.

Besides the personnel changes, Man City is also getting used to new tactical ideas. Foden said that Maresca's style still has many similarities with Guardiola, especially in the way they build from the back and control the game.

However, the team has adjusted the defensive organization, formation setup, and ball progression. The English midfielder refused to reveal details but affirmed that the players are adapting positively to the new methods.

“All I've ever known at the first team is Pep Guardiola, so working with a new coach feels like a fresh start. I'm enjoying the process. I like the new coaching staff, the new ideas, and the way we play. I'm very excited for the new season.”, Foden admitted.
