However, this measure quickly sparked a strong backlash. Many fans stated that they shared login information with family or friends only to assist with registration, transfer, and ticket management, not for the purpose of reselling for profit.

Man United admitted that it had not anticipated the prevalence of account sharing among family members or groups of acquainted fans. The club also acknowledged that the communication and impact of the investigation had caused "genuine distress and anxiety" for some regular matchgoers.

Only cancel tickets in serious cases

In its statement, Manchester United Football Club also affirmed that no fan was investigated solely for using the approved ticket transfer or management features. Each case was reviewed individually by ticket office staff, rather than relying on automated decisions.

The harshest penalties, including the revocation of season tickets, were only applied when there was evidence that the account was involved in organized ticket touting, systematic abuse of the system, or financial gain.

For cases without these signs, Man United pledged not to cancel season tickets. Tickets revoked after confirmation of violations would be reallocated to fans on the waiting list, rather than being transferred to corporate hospitality packages.
