Forward Nguyễn Xuân Son has voiced his resolve to lead Vietnam to the 2026 ASEAN Cup title.
Striker Nguyễn Xuân Son recently shared with ESPN about the Vietnam team's journey in the 2026 ASEAN Cup. "We had to play many matches, so sometimes I needed rest," Xuân Son told ESPN.
"I respect the coach's (Kim Sang Sik) decision. The players who started played very well. We are a team, and everyone has their role," Xuân Son said after Vietnam's 3-0 win over Indonesia, where Coach Kim Sang Sik kept him on the bench and only brought him on in the second half. After coming on, Xuân Son scored to make it 3-0.

"The most important thing was to bring three points back to Vietnam. We played very well, especially in the first half when we scored two goals. It was a wonderful night. Now we will return to Vietnam to prepare for the match against Cambodia," Xuân Son continued.
He acknowledged that the match against Indonesia was difficult due to the pressure of playing away. "We prepared very well," Xuân Son admitted. The Vietnam striker expressed: "The whole team did a great job. Getting three points on Indonesia's home ground is extremely challenging. The fans here created a very passionate atmosphere and cheered wholeheartedly for Indonesia, so this was a very special night for us."
Xuân Son also expressed his determination to win the ASEAN Cup again with Vietnam. "We played very well against Indonesia," Xuân Son affirmed. He emphasized: "We fight for this because the Vietnamese people want to lift the trophy once more. We will give our all to achieve that goal."
Vietnam are currently top of Group A with 7 points from 2 wins and 1 draw. Singapore also have 7 points but are second in Group A due to inferior goal difference. Meanwhile, Indonesia are third with 6 points. In the final matchday on August 7, Vietnam will face Cambodia at Mỹ Đình Stadium, while Indonesia will be away to Singapore.
