Defensive alarm: Arsenal fall 1-3 to Real Betis

Arsenal once again frustrated fans by losing 3-1 to Real Betis in a friendly, revealing numerous defensive mistakes before the upcoming campaign.

Arsenal delivered another forgettable performance during their preparations for the 2026/27 season, suffering a defeat 1-3 against Real Betis in the friendly match held at the Aviva Stadium (Dublin). Despite creating several chances throughout the 90 minutes, individual defensive errors cost the reigning Premier League champions dearly.

Right from the opening whistle, the Gunners pushed high and nearly opened the scoring. However, Viktor Gyokeres missed a golden opportunity after a well-placed pass from Kai Havertz. Failing to capitalize, Arsenal quickly conceded in the 9th minute when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga mishandled a corner kick, allowing Rodrigo Riquelme to score from close range for Real Betis.

Mikel Arteta's side faced further trouble when Nelson Deossa fired a stunning long-range shot to double the lead in the 26th minute. Although Piero Hincapie headed home to reduce the deficit to 1-2 from a Christos Tzolis corner, Arsenal made things difficult for themselves just before halftime. Kai Havertz lost the ball in front of the penalty area, enabling Pablo Fornals to seize the opportunity and make it 3-1.

In the second half, Arteta made several changes to improve the game. Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and several young players were given chances, but Arsenal remained completely stifled by the tight defense of the La Liga side. More frustratingly, the London club failed to register a single shot on target for the remainder of the match.

Not only did they leave empty-handed, Arsenal also received bad news as young talent Louie Copley suffered a knee injury and had to leave the pitch early. The 1-3 defeat to Real Betis serves as a clear warning for Mikel Arteta as the new season is just days away from kicking off.
