OFFICIAL: UEFA changes two important rules in the Champions League

UEFA has confirmed modifications to the rules on yellow card bans and the on-field clock, which will be applied in the Champions League from this season.

Before the group stage begins, UEFA has officially announced two important changes that could directly affect players and the fan experience.

The first change relates to the number of yellow cards that result in a suspension for a player or coaching staff member. Under the previous rule, an individual would be banned for one match after collecting three yellow cards. Subsequent suspensions were triggered when the accumulated count reached 5 and 7.

However, UEFA has raised the threshold for the first suspension from three to four yellow cards. After that, a player or coaching staff member is suspended upon receiving a sixth, eighth, and subsequent even-numbered yellow cards.

Article 63.02b of UEFA's regulations states: "From the first match of the group stage, a player or coaching staff member will be suspended for the next match after receiving four yellow cards that do not lead to a red card, as well as after each subsequent even-numbered yellow card (sixth, eighth, etc.)."

Raising the yellow card threshold will help players reduce the risk of missing matches after just a few games. The new rule applies not only to the Champions League but also takes effect in the Europa League and Conference League.

The second change concerns the clock displayed on the large screens in stadiums. Previously, the clock had to stop at 45 and 90 minutes, leaving spectators in the stadium unable to know exactly how many minutes of stoppage time had been played.

Under the new rule, the clock is allowed to continue running until the referee blows the whistle to end each half. The same principle applies during extra time if the match is extended by 30 minutes.

This adjustment brings UEFA's club competitions more in line with English football. The Premier League and the English Football League system have allowed the stadium clock to continue running during stoppage time since the 2023/24 season.
