South Korean football is in turmoil as police raid the KFA headquarters

Seoul police searched the KFA headquarters as part of an inquiry into the controversies over the hiring procedure of coach Hong Myung-bo. The situation adds to the mounting pressure on the leadership of Korean football.

South Korean football is going through turbulent times as the Korea Football Association (KFA) suddenly becomes the center of an investigation. Notably, this happens just a few months before the South Korean team enters the 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, a tournament where the Taegeuk Warriors are grouped with the Vietnam national team.

According to Reuters, Seoul police searched the KFA headquarters on August 6 as part of an investigation into allegations of obstruction of activities during the appointment of head coach Hong Myung-bo. This case has been controversial for some time and has flared up again after South Korea's disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup.

The root of the matter began in 2024, when the KFA ended a months-long search for a coach with numerous foreign candidates and abruptly appointed Hong Myung-bo after a brief meeting. This decision immediately drew criticism due to the perceived lack of transparency in the selection process.

After South Korea was eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, the wave of criticism intensified. During a hearing before the South Korean National Assembly last month, coach Hong Myung-bo denied receiving any preferential treatment in the appointment process and took responsibility for the team's below-par performance at the world's biggest football event.

Earlier, the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism had concluded that the KFA violated its own internal regulations in appointing both Hong Myung-bo and his predecessor Jurgen Klinsmann. The ministry stated that the meeting between the technical director and Hong Myung-bo could not be considered a proper interview. However, the inspection found no evidence of legal violations and did not demand the cancellation of the contract of the 1969-born tactician.

It is known that the South Korean police received a complaint and opened an investigation before the 2026 World Cup. The current search of the KFA headquarters is seen as a new step to gather additional documents for the verification process. As of now, no criminal conclusions have been reached against coach Hong Myung-bo or KFA officials.

The latest developments have drawn fans' attention as South Korea will be one of Vietnam's opponents in the group stage of the 2027 Asian Cup. Although the investigation is not directly related to on-field matters, the upheaval at the top of the KFA could create significant pressure on South Korean football during the preparation for the continental tournament.
