Viewpoint: MU and the Rashford problem

Marcus Rashford has once again become the focal point at Old Trafford. He is back at Manchester United in a highly contradictory situation: Still part of the squad, but his future is virtually over.

1. Some farewells require no words, and Marcus Rashford's story at Manchester United appears to be one such case. Barcelona's failure to trigger the purchase clause does not reopen the door at Old Trafford. Instead, it presents United with a tougher challenge: How to deal with a star who is no longer part of the project but still has a valid contract.

Small details often speak volumes about the reality. Rashford has lost his familiar jersey number, with the number 10 now assigned to Matheus Cunha. The dressing room no longer feels like his home. This indicates that Manchester United are gearing up for a new era without Rashford.

What's more, the English forward has never given a clear indication that he wishes to come back. During his loan spell at Barcelona, Rashford often talked about his new life and his aspiration to remain with the Catalan side. Even after the transfer collapsed, his comments never suggested a player desperate to go back to his former club.

Thus, the issue for Manchester United is not just technical but also psychological. A player who was once an academy icon, who captained the team and was tipped to be the figurehead of the post-Ferguson era, now feels out of place at the club that raised him.

2. If anyone is under the most pressure in this story, it is Michael Carrick. The young coach is entering his first full season as permanent manager and must immediately tackle the toughest issue in the locker room.

In theory, Carrick could offer Rashford a fresh start. If he returns to form, United would not only gain a quality attacking option but also avoid taking a major financial hit on a depreciating asset.

However, modern football is not driven by sentiment. For a manager, the priority is to build a stable system and a united dressing room. Carrick must send a clear message that no one is above the team, not even a club legend. If Rashford's return is based solely on his name or commercial value, it would undermine the principles Carrick is working to instill.

Conversely, if Carrick opts to completely sideline Rashford, he must also be prepared for the repercussions. Manchester United would lose an experienced attacking player and would face a financial dilemma, as finding a club willing to take on the English star's high wages will be challenging.

3. Taking everything into account, the most plausible outcome is that Rashford will leave Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts.
