Premier League Club Makes Major Announcement! £40 Million Signing of 23-Year-Old Manchester City Backup Goalkeeper Sets New Club Record

On August 7th, Beijing time, Premier League outfit Leeds United confirmed the acquisition of 23-year-old England international James Trafford from Manchester City, securing him on a five-year deal until 2031.

As previously reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the fee for Trafford stands at £40 million, along with potential performance-related bonuses. Manchester City will be entitled to 20% of any future transfer profit and hold a right to match any offer.

The £40 million price tag sets a new club record for Leeds United, making Trafford the most expensive British goalkeeper in football history.

A product of Manchester City's academy, Trafford returned to the club in July 2025 for a fee of €31.2 million. Last season, he made 17 appearances for City, starting all matches in the League Cup and FA Cup, which the club went on to win both trophies.

Thanks to his impressive performances at City, Trafford made his England debut in March this year and was included in the squad for the summer World Cup under manager Thomas Tuchel. Currently, his market value on Transfermarkt is €25 million.

Following Trafford's departure, Manchester City have essentially secured his replacement. Argentine international goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli will join from Marseille and serve as backup to Donnarumma in the new season.
