Cambodian football will be as successful as… volleyball.

Cambodian football has not yet achieved success in the region, but at this point, it is still following the right development path and deserves to be taken seriously by many football nations in the region.

1. Interestingly, the clearest evidence of the effectiveness of this approach comes not from football, but from… volleyball. The team that was once underestimated has successively overcome both Thailand and Indonesia to win the SEA V.Cup for the first time. However, for those closely following Cambodian sports, this is not an "earthquake" that came from luck.

In fact, before winning the SEA V.Cup, Cambodian volleyball had persistently invested for nearly a decade. They built a stable training system with Chinese coaches, developed the national Techo League, boldly opened the door to foreign players to improve the level of professionalism, and also focused on training coaches according to the standards of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). Each link was gradually perfected, so that when the foundation was solid enough, success appeared as an inevitable consequence.

That is exactly what is happening with Cambodian football, with the choice to develop multiple foundational elements simultaneously. The restructuring of the league into the Cambodian Premier League (CPL) was the first step. This is a comprehensive overhaul of the way it operates. Clubs must meet higher standards in terms of finances, facilities, youth training, and professional governance. The goal is not simply to create a more attractive league, but to turn the domestic league into a platform to improve the quality of players and the national team.

Alongside that, there are long-term investments in youth training through the FIFA Forward program. Cambodia builds a school football system, expands academies, organizes youth tournaments, and creates a clear pathway for players to develop to the first team and then the national team. This is something that Cambodian football had almost never done systematically before.

Cambodia has also made good use of the legacy from the 2023 SEA Games. Modern stadiums like Morodok Techo not only served one sports event but continue to be important infrastructure for professional football. The ability to host international events, the appeal to fans, and the image of Cambodian football have been significantly enhanced.

2. Notably, those changes have begun to reflect at the club level. If a few years ago, it was hard to imagine a Cambodian representative going deep in Asian competitions, now Phnom Penh Crown or Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng have made headlines many times. Especially, Svay Rieng's consecutive appearances in the AFC Challenge League final show that the gap between Cambodian clubs and the average Asian level is gradually narrowing.

That is a very similar sign to the journey that Cambodian volleyball has gone through. Success did not appear immediately at the national team level, but started from the domestic competition system. When the domestic league becomes stronger, players play in a higher quality environment, training becomes more systematic, the national team will be the ultimate beneficiary.

Cambodian football is now also following that development logic. Perhaps their national team is not yet strong enough to compete with Vietnam, Thailand, or Indonesia in major tournaments. The head-to-head record still shows a gap, and the current squad lacks depth to make leaps. But if we only look at the results on the pitch and conclude that Cambodian football has not progressed, it would be an incomplete assessment. In sports development, the national team's results are often the final product of an entire system. When the foundation is not solid enough, any success is hard to sustain. Conversely, if the system is built in the right direction, achievements are only a matter of time. That is the lesson that Cambodian volleyball has just demonstrated, and it is the path that Cambodian football is pursuing.
