Malaysian expert: 'Singapore will learn from Vietnam how to contain Indonesia'

Indonesia is set to play a decisive match against Singapore in the last group stage of the AFF Hyundai Cup 2026, held at Jalan Besar Stadium (Singapore) on the evening of August 7th Vietnam time.

Singapore has the upper hand with a higher points tally and home advantage. In contrast, Indonesia is under immense pressure as only a victory will secure their place in the semifinals.

Malaysian football pundit Raja Isa Raja Akram Shah stated that given their advantageous position, Singapore will probably not adopt an attacking approach.

He commented: "The pressure is on Indonesia. Singapore just needs a draw to reach the semifinals. Under these circumstances, I believe they will not play an open game. In my view, Singapore will replicate the way Vietnam beat Indonesia in the past."

The coach, who spent several years working with Indonesian clubs, believes that Gavin Lee will establish a strong defensive structure starting from the midfield.

"Indonesia frequently finds it difficult against teams that defend deep from the midfield area. Hence, John Herdman must deploy sufficiently strong midfielders to dominate the midfield battle," remarked Raja Isa.

In his view, Thom Haye remains a top-class creative midfielder who can dictate the tempo and provide key passes. Nevertheless, Coach John Herdman needs another attacking midfielder who can supply precise deliveries to the frontline.

"I'm not concerned about Indonesia's strikers. What worries me is who will provide them with service. Even the best forwards will struggle to score if they don't get good passes," he stated.

Raja Isa also suggested that Indonesia must remain patient if they are up against Singapore's well-organized defense.

"While Indonesia is forced to win, taking all three points against a disciplined and organized Singapore side is far from easy. Indonesia needs to be patient in possession and look for ways to create openings to exploit in front of Singapore's goal," he concluded.
