Real Madrid's €140 million record signing! Why is Diomande so expensive?

By Han Bing. After a "long anticipation" of two weeks, on August 6, Real Madrid finally announced the signing of Diomande on a seven-year deal, with a transfer fee of €125 million plus €15 million in variables, for a total of €140 million.

Diomande's base fee and total amount both exceeded Bellingham's (€103 million base, €127 million total), making him Real Madrid's most expensive signing ever. At the same time, he surpassed Nicolas Pépé (€80 million, 2019) to become the most expensive African player in transfer fees.

Although his stats of 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 games last season were impressive, this 19-year-old Bundesliga Rookie of the Season had only one full season of experience in Europe's top five leagues. The total transfer fee of €140 million is truly astonishing. How can this Ivorian winger, who was playing in US high school soccer three years ago and only made his top-five league debut last March, be so costly?

Diomande's total transfer fee is second only to Dembélé (€148 million, 2017) in La Liga history. Among global U21 players, it ranks third behind Mbappé (€180 million, 2018) and Dembélé (€148 million). Counting only the base fee (€125 million), Diomande is also second in La Liga after Félix (€127.2 million, 2019) and seventh worldwide. Among the 23 players with transfer fees over €100 million, Diomande's age (19 years, 267 days) is younger only than Mbappé (19 years, 193 days) and Félix (19 years, 237 days).

Diomande has less than two seasons of experience in top-five league club competitions, with a total of just 46 matches, far fewer than Dembélé (79 matches in three seasons), Mbappé (104 matches in three seasons), and Bellingham (132 matches in three seasons). Among players with transfer fees above €100 million, only Félix and Enzo had fewer top-five league appearances at the time of their transfers—both moved from the Portuguese league to a top-five league. Enzo had 113 top-level league matches in Argentina and Portugal, while only Félix had fewer than Diomande: 43 top-level league matches. However, Félix produced 20 goals and 11 assists in those 43 games, better stats than Diomande's 15 goals and 11 assists.

Coincidentally, Diomande's first-team debut last March was at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid. Although he didn't fully perform due to nerves, he still dribbled past Rodrygo and Bellingham, showcasing his dribbling skills. He also managed to swap shirts with Mbappé after the match. Little did he know that just 16 months later, he would become the new teammate of Bellingham and Mbappé.

Real Madrid's reference for signing Diomande was exactly Bellingham, who joined from the Bundesliga three years ago and is only one year older. With Diomande's arrival and Vinicius's renewal, Real Madrid has completed an upgrade and restructuring of their attack. The team not only has a two-pronged attack system centered on Mbappé, but also added Diomande as a potential unlimited wide threat.

Diomande, like Dembélé and Bellingham, moved from the Bundesliga to a La Liga giant, but he has the least experience and is younger. Why is he more expensive? The famous football data company Opta provides the answer: Real Madrid is not just buying the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season and dribbling king (118 successful dribbles), but also his potential to become a "Ballon d'Or-level" superstar.

Diomande, who became famous in the US at age 16, later failed trials with the MLS, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Rangers, Olympiacos, and Crystal Palace. His true mentor is Jeff Ruano, a Mexican-American former baseball executive, whose scouting system has deep roots in Africa. Three years ago, he discovered Diomande after he returned to Côte d'Ivoire. Ruano, after watching a YouTube highlights video, identified Diomande as the "new Messi." In November 2024, his acquired La Liga club Leganés signed Diomande.

During the international break in March 2025, Leganés coach Jiménez called him up to the first team for "training partner" duties, and witnessed Diomande tearing the first-team defense apart. Jiménez gave Diomande the most important first lesson for a newcomer: keep the fearless attitude of a rookie, but show respect to the first-team regulars. Training must be the earliest to arrive and the latest to leave, for self-discipline and to let teammates get to know him quickly.

In the 2024/25 season, Diomande played 10 La Liga matches, attempting 6.5 dribbles per 90 minutes, ranking fourth among La Liga players with at least 400 minutes played in that period. He completed 3.8 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, with a success rate of 59%. Only three players in La Liga had a higher dribble success rate than Diomande; Vinicius (40%) and Yamal (54.8%) were both below him. He carried the ball forward over 10 meters 6.6 times per 90 minutes, ranking third in La Liga, and only four players averaged more open-play chance creation than Diomande (2.3 per 90).

Last season in the Bundesliga, Diomande exploded: 12 goals and 8 assists in 33 matches. Among players under 24 in the top five leagues, only Yamal (16 goals, 11 assists) had more combined goal contributions than Diomande. His dribble attempts rose to 7.7 per 90 minutes, the highest among Bundesliga players with over 900 minutes played. Among the 68 players with at least 2 dribble attempts per 90 minutes, his success rate of 55.4% ranked fourth.

Diomande is equally skilled with both feet, a nightmare for defenses whether in tight spaces or long runs. He can use his speed on counterattacks and also break down defenses in set plays with his individual technique. Moreover, Diomande has a positive defensive attitude and performs well. Last season, he made 21 successful tackles that led to entering the opponent's box, 7 more than the second-ranked Bundesliga player. He had 29 successful tackles in the opponent's box (second only to Bayern's Díaz with 30), and also completed 29 actions where he beat at least two players in a single attack, 10 more than the second-ranked player!

Diomande's long-range runs are also astonishing: he made 174 ball carries over 10 meters, 13 more than the second-ranked player. He created more scoring chances from dribbling (32) than shots after dribbling (20), contributing more to the team's overall attack. His pass completion rate of 84% ranked ninth in the Bundesliga, showing remarkable passing stability for a winger. His expected assists per 90 minutes in open play were 10.1, second only to Olise (15.9), but his teammates' quality is far inferior to Bayern's stars.

Importantly, Diomande is younger than Olise, whom Real Madrid was initially rumored to be chasing, and has higher potential for improvement. With a seven-year contract, Real Madrid is securing a future Ballon d'Or-level forward, continuing their strategy of buying semi-finished potential stars. However, this time they are poaching from the Bundesliga rather than Brazil.
