ASEAN Cup 2026: Vietnam's Opponent in the Semifinals Determined

Before the final round of Group B, Thailand leads with 9 points from a perfect record. The Thai side only needs a draw against Myanmar in their last match to guarantee progression as group winners.

This outcome gives the "War Elephants" an advantage in head-to-head standings, and they could only be eliminated from the tournament if they lose to Myanmar by a margin of 4 goals while Malaysia beats the Philippines.

Currently, Malaysia and Myanmar both have 6 points, but Malaysia sits second in the group due to a superior head-to-head record. Myanmar will face group leaders Thailand, but they still control their own destiny: a win would secure their spot in the next round.

As for Malaysia, they first need to defeat the Philippines before considering any other scenarios. If they fail to win, they must hope that Myanmar loses their away match in Thailand.

The Philippines, with 3 points, are in fourth place. Theoretically, they could still advance, but the odds are extremely low. Coach Carles Cuadrat's team is behind in points and must play away in the final round.

To squeeze through the narrow gap and reach the next round, the Philippines must beat Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and hope that Myanmar loses to Thailand. If that happens, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Malaysia would all have 6 points, forcing a tiebreaker based on head-to-head results among the three teams.

Since the Philippines lost 1-4 to Myanmar, and Myanmar lost 1-2 to Malaysia, the Philippines would need to beat Malaysia by a margin of at least 5 goals while Myanmar loses to Thailand to secure a semifinal spot.

The two semifinal spots from Group A have already been secured by Vietnam and Singapore. The Golden Star Warriors continue their title defense as group winners, while Singapore clinched their place by holding Indonesia to a 1-1 draw in a "do-or-die" match, maintaining their second-place position.

As Group A winners, Vietnam will play the first leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal away on August 16, and the second leg at My Dinh Stadium on August 19.
