Indonesian player slapped during argument with fans at ASEAN Cup 2026

Following the 1-1 stalemate against Singapore at Jalan Besar, the Indonesian squad faced a tense mood as the outcome ended their campaign in the ASEAN Cup 2026 group stage under coach John Herdman.

After the match, an incident between players Jens Raven and Shayne Pattynama drew attention after footage of Raven slapping his teammate circulated on Indonesian social media.

According to Indonesian media, the altercation occurred as players approached the area where Indonesian fans were gathered after the final whistle. Garuda supporters expressed clear disappointment that their team failed to secure a must-win match, needing three points to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

The situation escalated as some fans loudly criticized the players. Midfielder Thom Haye reportedly moved toward the stands to argue with supporters, even questioning the refereeing decisions during the match. However, the fans rejected the blame placed on the referee, insisting that Indonesia's performance was the main reason for their elimination.

In this context, Shayne Pattynama was said to have approached the fan area in an attempt to calm the situation. However, a video later emerged on social media showing Jens Raven slapping Pattynama.

When Shayne raised his hand toward the fans and continued speaking, Jens pushed his hand away, grabbed him by the neck, and then slapped his senior teammate as a way to calm him down.

The incident drew attention because it occurred right after one of Indonesia's biggest disappointments in the tournament. The 1-1 draw with Singapore left Indonesia with only seven points, finishing third in Group A behind Vietnam and Singapore, thus officially eliminated. Earlier, Indonesia had suffered a 0-3 defeat to Vietnam in the penultimate match.
