Vietnam vs Malaysia Head-to-Head: A Decade of Unbeaten Streak

Vietnam vs Malaysia encounter: Ahead of the semi-final showdown at the 2026 ASEAN Cup, Kim Sang Sik's men can take confidence from the fact that they have remained unbeaten against Malaysia in their last ten meetings.

Vietnam vs Malaysia: 10 years, 10 matches without defeat against the Malaysians

The last time Malaysia beat Vietnam was back in 2014, during the AFF Cup semi-finals. On that occasion, Malaysia won 4-2 (5-4 on aggregate). Since that defeat, Vietnam have maintained a 10-match unbeaten run against their rivals, with nine victories and just one draw.

In the 2016 AFF Cup, Vietnam edged past Malaysia 1-0 in the group stage thanks to a solitary goal from Trong Hoang. Two years later, the two sides faced each other three times at the 2018 AFF Cup. Vietnam won 2-0 in the group stage with goals from Anh Duc and Cong Phuong.

The winning streak continued at the 2020 AFF Cup, where Vietnam beat Malaysia 3-0 in the group stage. During the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Park Hang-seo's side also defeated their opponents twice, with scores of 1-0 and 2-1 respectively.

However, FIFA later determined that Malaysia had violated regulations regarding the use of naturalized players and awarded a 3-0 forfeit loss.

In the return leg on March 31, 2026, Vietnam once again asserted their superiority with a 3-1 victory. This was also the most recent match between the two sides before their reunion at the ASEAN Cup.

Thus, in the last 10 meetings, Vietnam have won nine and drawn only once. This impressive record gives a significant psychological advantage to Kim Sang Sik's team, even though past results cannot determine the outcome of a semi-final tie.
