Thailand and Singapore had already won, while Vietnam claimed its first championship only in 2008. Malaysia had to wait until 2010 for its inaugural triumph.

Nearly two decades later, these four teams once again find themselves together in the round of the strongest four, but this time, each has at least one championship to its name.

The presence of Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore also highlights the special nature of the ASEAN Cup 2026. No surprise was big enough to allow a team that had never won the title to break into the semifinals. Instead, the four most traditional powers in the region continue to compete for the prestigious trophy.
