ASEAN Cup 2026 Semifinals: The Fated Rivalry Between Vietnam and Malaysia

The Vietnam-Malaysia matchup is considered one of the classic and most emotional fixtures for Southeast Asian football fans in recent years. As of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinals, the two teams have met a total of 15 times in the history of the regional championship (including the earlier Tiger Cup and ASEAN Cup eras).

Most notably in the historic year of 2018, they faced each other three times. After a 2-0 win in the group stage, Vietnam drew 2-2 in a dramatic away match before a narrow 1-0 victory at Mỹ Đình in the second leg of the final to claim the championship.

Malaysia and Vietnam recently met in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Coach Kim Sang-sik's side lost 0-4, but later had the result overturned to a 3-0 win in the first leg due to the opponent fielding an ineligible player. In the return leg last March, Vietnam defeated Malaysia 3-1.

Coach Tan Cheng Hoe currently has a squad of experienced regional players like Sergio Aguero, Paulo Josue, and Mohamadou Sumareh. Their style may not be dominant or feature standout stars, but it is cohesive, resilient, and building character through each match in this year's tournament. Malaysia also displays a physically strong, fast-paced game, especially dangerous in transition situations.

Malaysia is certainly not an easy opponent for Coach Kim Sang-sik and his players. They are a highly regarded collective with many players who have played together for a long time and have a certain tactical stability.

In this rematch, Coach Kim Sang-sik's team is still considered slightly superior. The reigning champions are showing impressive form. The attack of the Golden Star Warriors is effective, while their ability to control the game and transition is increasingly flexible.

However, the semifinals are a completely different story. A knockout match can be decided by a moment, a mistake, or a set piece. Therefore, if Malaysia indeed becomes Vietnam's opponent, this will be a highly anticipated showdown.

According to the schedule, the first leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal between Malaysia and Vietnam takes place on August 16 at the opponent's ground. The two teams will meet again in the second leg at Mỹ Đình Stadium on August 19.
