Arda Guler remains a standout performer during Real Madrid's new season buildup. Nonetheless, the outstanding performance of the Turkish playmaker puts Jose Mourinho in a tricky spot as Jude Bellingham nears his return.
Arda Guler is emerging as one of Real Madrid's best-performing players in the pre-season period. Without needing to score or assist, the Turkish midfielder still leaves a clear mark in the 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros in Budapest.
Guler contributed to both of Real's goals. In the opening goal, his corner kick initiated the play that led to Ciria assisting Mario Rivas. Then, a delicate touch from Guler put Federico Valverde in a good position before the Uruguayan midfielder set up Espi to score.
That is also a familiar sight of Guler this summer. He constantly appears in key areas, participates in organizing play, and makes a difference with his technical skills.
Against Ferencvaros, besides the two pre-assists, Guler also took Real Madrid's first dangerous shot, created a chance for Endrick with a pass into the box, and repeatedly tried his luck from the second line.
Looking further, Jose Mourinho has been mainly using Guler in the number 10 position during the pre-season preparation phase. When Bernardo Silva appeared, the 21-year-old was sometimes pushed to the right wing, but the area behind the striker remains where he showcases most of his qualities.
The problem is that Real Madrid has too many options for the new season. On the right flank, Diomande is considered a strong candidate for a starting spot, while Brahim Diaz is also waiting for his chance. Rodrygo will add more competitive pressure once fully recovered.
More importantly, Guler's direct competitor for the number 10 position is Jude Bellingham. If he regains the form he showed in his first season at Madrid, Bellingham almost certainly has the advantage. The English midfielder remains one of the central figures in the club's long-term plans.
However, Guler also has grounds to compete. Last season, the Turkish international made a strong leap forward, scoring 6 goals and providing 14 assists. This summer, he continues to maintain a high level of performance, while Bellingham has not yet reached his best form to immediately start the new season.
That could help Guler earn more playing minutes in the early rounds of La Liga. And if he continues to perform as he is now, Mourinho will face a difficult question: How to find a place for one of Real Madrid's most in-form players?
