Ahead of the English Super Cup encounter, Arsenal and Man City had opposite preparations. The Gunners suffered a 2-3 defeat to Dortmund in the Emirates Cup, while Man City overturned a deficit to win 3-1 against Atletico Madrid in a friendly in Seoul.

Losing to Dortmund, Arsenal exposed many defensive issues.

The London club then created some notable chances. Gyokeres hit the crossbar, while Havertz and Gabriel also had dangerous headers but couldn't find the equalizer. In the 29th minute, Dortmund doubled their lead with a beautiful move. Karetsas sprinted down the right flank and delivered a perfect curler into the far corner, leaving the Arsenal goalkeeper with no chance.
