Arteta speaks frankly about Arsenal's issues after defeat to Dortmund

Mikel Arteta expressed his disappointment after Arsenal's 2-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates, yet he noticed positive aspects from the displays of Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes, and Ethan in the pre-season.

Arsenal could not win the Emirates Cup after suffering a 2-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. After the match, coach Mikel Arteta admitted he was not satisfied with the result, especially when the team revealed some problems that rarely appear in their system, particularly in set-piece defensive situations and the ability to choose the timing of intervention.

“Of course I'm disappointed because we lost the match. There were some moments when we didn't play like ourselves, especially in set pieces, the way we defended, and the timing of our actions. Normally we do those things very effectively,”Arteta shared.

However, the Arsenal manager believed that the team still created many notable attacking combinations. The problem lay in the final pass and the ability to take advantage of opportunities, as many situations could have been developed into clearer chances.

One of the names that received the greatest praise was Christos Tzolis. The Greek newcomer continued to leave his mark with an assist, thereby making it three consecutive pre-season games in which he directly contributed to an Arsenal goal.

Arteta was particularly impressed with the physical condition and work rate of this winger.

“He is performing very well. Tzolis is fit, confident, and sharp. He had an assist, won a penalty, and created two or three other very good chances. His workload so far has been incredible,”he said.

Before kickoff, Arsenal fans also had the chance to welcome Bruno Guimaraes, the new signing from Newcastle United. Arteta believes that the Brazilian midfielder can bring a completely new energy to the team, not only adding professional quality but also creating more internal competition within the squad.

“He describes himself as a warrior, and I think that's very true. Bruno is a warrior but also possesses quality, instinct, leadership, and great personality,”Arteta commented.

Besides the two new signings, Arteta also praised Ethan Nwaneri for his performances throughout the summer. He affirmed that the young player has had an "excellent" pre-season and has pleased the coaching staff.

Arsenal will soon enter the final phase of preparation as all the players who just participated in the World Cup return to training. According to Arteta, everyone will assemble from tomorrow before the Gunners continue with a friendly against Como, then look ahead to the Community Shield and the opening round of the Premier League.

With little time left, the defeat to Dortmund is clearly a warning for Arsenal. However, the quick integration of the new signings and the positive signals from the young players still give Arteta a foundation to refine the squad before the official season begins.
