The £80m star highlights Arsenal's weaknesses ahead of the new season

Viktor Gyokeres conceded that Arsenal need to work on several aspects following the 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, particularly in defensive moments where they could have been more effective.

Arsenal were unable to end the Emirates Cup with a victory after Borussia Dortmund beat them 3-2 at the Emirates. Viktor Gyokeres scored the second goal for the hosts from a penalty, yet the Swedish forward felt that Arsenal's performance still left quite a few issues before the new campaign.

In the post-match interview, Gyokeres particularly highlighted the team's ability to convert chances and the moments when Arsenal lost their defensive solidity.

“We had several good opportunities and perhaps should have found the net from some of them in the first half. However, it's obvious that we have to improve in the moments we allowed goals.”, Gyokeres shared.

According to the £80m striker, the same problems persisted in the second half, especially the goal conceded from a set piece.

“The same happened in the second half – we let in a goal from a corner. A bit unfortunate, but we must improve. We need to ensure we don't concede goals like that once the season begins.”, he emphasized.

Nevertheless, Gyokeres observed encouraging signs in Arsenal's offensive setup. Martin Odegaard's return enabled the Gunners to produce some impressive link-up play, particularly during the opening stages.

Arsenal's skipper frequently found pockets of space to connect with Kai Havertz and Gyokeres, generating scenarios that pushed Dortmund's defense deeper.

“We haven't played much together today, but during the opening 20-25 minutes, the chemistry was excellent. Odegaard's ideas were very clear, so it was easy for me to get into sync and establish a connection with him.”, Gyokeres remarked.

The Swedish forward also provided an encouraging update on his physical condition before the 2026/27 season. Following a hectic summer at the World Cup, Gyokeres stated that he feels significantly more energetic compared to this time last year.

The Dortmund game marked Gyokeres' first return to the Emirates since Arsenal clinched the Premier League title in front of their supporters. The 28-year-old striker couldn't conceal his enthusiasm about once again performing in that familiar environment.

“It's wonderful to return, soak in the atmosphere, and reconnect with the supporters. But naturally, we also hoped for a positive outcome.”, Gyokeres stated.

Even though Arsenal are not at their peak yet, Gyokeres remains confident that the squad is heading in the right direction. With key figures gradually coming back after the World Cup, the Swedish forward anticipates that the Gunners will be fully ready before the season officially kicks off.
