ASEAN Cup 2026: Malaysia Ready to Surprise Vietnam

Malaysia secured a semifinal spot after a 1-0 victory over the Philippines in the final Group B match on August 8. The only goal, scored by G. Pavithran with a header in the first half, helped the "Malayan Tigers" finish the group stage in second place with nine points, behind Thailand.

This is only the second time Malaysia has reached the semifinals of the Southeast Asian championship since 2018. Coach Tan Cheng Hoe congratulated his players for overcoming a tough match against the Philippines in the final group stage game. However, the Malaysian strategist also emphasized that the team's immediate task is to quickly recover physically and prepare as best as possible for the semifinals.

On August 16, Malaysia will play at home against the top-four opponent, defending champions Vietnam. Malaysian media highlighted that the Vietnamese team enters the semifinals with an impressive record, scoring 13 goals in four group matches and conceding only once.

Coach Tan Cheng Hoe, who served as an assistant coach in the Malaysian coaching staff when the country won the Southeast Asian championship in 2010 and later led Malaysia to the runner-up position in 2018 after losing to Vietnam in the final.

He admitted that his players will face a major challenge. "Vietnam is the higher-rated team, and we are the underdogs. The players have nothing to lose. When facing Vietnam, we need to enjoy this moment. Hopefully, the stadium will be packed again to cheer for the team," said Tan Cheng Hoe.

The Malaysian coach also stated that the team's spirit and cohesion have been improving after the group stage. "The collective spirit and relationships among the players are very good now. However, we still have areas to improve. The players are increasingly understanding the tactics required by the coaching staff," he shared.

One of the standout players for Malaysia in the group stage was winger G. Pavithran. The 21-year-old scored his first international goal for the national team with the decisive strike against the Philippines, thus sending Malaysia to the semifinals.

Pavithran also received the Man of the Match award for the second time in this year's tournament. However, the young Malaysian player remained cautious ahead of the clash with the defending champions Vietnam: "After the match against the Philippines, we must focus on the game against Vietnam, recover well, train seriously, and prepare to the fullest."

With the group stage results, the two ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal pairings have been confirmed. Malaysia will face Vietnam, while Singapore will take on Thailand. This year's tournament also marks 30 years since the Southeast Asian football championship was first held.

According to the tournament format, both the semifinals and finals are played over two legs. Vietnam will be away in Malaysia for the first leg on August 16, before returning home for the second leg on August 19. If they overcome Malaysia, Vietnam will face the winner of the other semifinal between Thailand and Singapore to compete for the ASEAN Cup 2026 title.
