Reuniting with Hanoi Police star, Adelaide United captain makes a blunt statement

Skipper Craig Goodwin states that Adelaide United will put personal feelings aside as they reunite with Stefan Mauk, currently playing for Cong An Ha Noi, in the AFC Champions League Elite playoff.

The clash between Adelaide United and Hanoi Police is drawing significant attention from Australian media, with Stefan Mauk emerging as one of the most notable figures. The 30-year-old midfielder will return to the familiar stadium where he made his name, but this time wearing a completely different jersey.

Mauk had three stints with Adelaide United, making a total of 107 appearances across all competitions. He left the Australian club last July on loan to Hanoi Police, before the Vietnamese side activated the buyout clause this May.

This promises to be a memorable return for a player who once received immense affection and respect at the South Australian club. However, speaking to News.com.au, captain Craig Goodwin declared that Adelaide United will set aside old memories and treat his former teammate like any other opponent.

“It’s probably an interesting side story that he’s playing against his old club and coming back to his hometown. But for us, Mauk is just another opponent like anyone else”, Goodwin shared.

Mauk himself admitted that returning to Adelaide in the colors of another team brings a special feeling. He never imagined he would appear at this venue without wearing the Adelaide United shirt.

The Hanoi Police midfielder even joked that this is probably the rare time he hopes his hometown team suffers a defeat.

“I didn’t think I’d come back here unless I was wearing the Adelaide United jersey. But as soon as I knew it was happening, my excitement was at its peak. I’m thrilled to be back, and this is probably the only time I hope Adelaide United loses”, Mauk said.

Despite facing many familiar faces, Mauk insists that won’t change how he approaches the game. The Australian player is known for his energetic and aggressive playing style in every challenge.

“The way I play is always intense, and I want to win every situation. Playing against my old club isn’t a chance to prove anything, but competing against people I know, in front of family and friends, always brings a great feeling”, Mauk shared.

The match between Adelaide United and CAHN will take place on August 11 at Hindmarsh Stadium (Coopers Stadium). The winner will secure a spot in the League Stage of the AFC Champions League Elite 2026/27, while the loser will drop to the AFC Champions League Two.
