Manchester United's young talent Dan Armer is becoming one of the standout yet less talked-about finds of the preseason phase.
The 2026 preseason is bringing many positive signs for young players who have come through the Manchester United academy. Shea Lacey is the most prominent name, while Harry Amass has also made a strong impression, however, Dan Armer is considered one of the "quiet winners" of the new season's preparation period.
This young center-back has been given playing time in every Manchester United friendly and has increasingly shown confidence when facing higher-quality opponents. Armer is only 18 years old and is noted for having a playing style quite similar to Harry Maguire. Notably, the veteran "Red Devils" center-back has also praised his junior extensively after his positive performances.
Harry Maguire had a chat with MUTV in Ireland ahead of the friendly between Manchester United and Leeds. Assessing Armer's performance, Maguire said: "He has played excellently during the preseason; Dan has been really fantastic."
The English center-back continued with words of praise for the 18-year-old: "At 18, playing in tough matches and wearing this club's shirt for the first time. He has shown great quality in the center-back position and hopefully can keep improving."
Maguire also sent words of encouragement to Armer: "Keep enjoying training and playing with us. There have been many good performances from the young players."
Armer will certainly hope to continue getting playing time in Manchester United's next two matches against Leeds and AC Milan. This possibility is well-founded, as Matthijs de Ligt is still recovering from an injury, while Lisandro Martinez has not yet rejoined the squad after the World Cup.
Currently, Dan Armer still sits behind Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and Matthijs de Ligt in the center-back pecking order. If needed, coach Michael Carrick could also move a full-back into the central defense. Both Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui have previously been capable of handling this role.
Nevertheless, Armer is making the most of the opportunities given to him. His performances in the preseason friendlies show that the young player is not overwhelmed when playing alongside first-team members.
After Tyler Fredricson moved to Lausanne, Armer has emerged as the next option if Manchester United need to reinforce their center-back position, and his consistent playing time before the new season is helping him gain valuable experience. More importantly, his displays have caught the attention of Manchester United fans.
The direct praise from Harry Maguire is also seen as a significant morale boost for Armer, showing that the 18-year-old center-back has earned respect from the first-team players.
