Liverpool has officially signed Barcelona's captain.

Liverpool has officially announced the signing of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan, with an option to buy at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan center-back arrived in Merseyside on Sunday afternoon and completed his medical examinations before putting pen to paper on an agreement with the Anfield club. Under the terms agreed, Liverpool has the right to sign Araujo permanently after the 2026/27 season for a fee of around £47 million.

Speaking on his debut day, Araujo did not hide his excitement about joining one of the most traditional clubs in England.

"I can't wait to start this new journey. I am truly very happy. Liverpool is a great club with a proud history. I am eager to meet my teammates, take to the pitch, and give my all. This is the right time for me to take the next step in my career," Araujo said.

The Uruguayan defender revealed that everything happened very quickly after he learned of Liverpool's interest. According to Araujo, this is the right decision at the right time and a necessary challenge for him to continue developing at the highest level.

One of the factors that Araujo is particularly looking forward to at Anfield is the opportunity to play alongside captain Virgil van Dijk. The Uruguayan star admitted that the Dutch center-back has long been a role model he admires.

"We all know how excellent Virgil is. He is the leader of the team, the backbone of the defense, and a role model for me personally. I am very excited to learn from him and play alongside him. With hard work and dedication, I believe we can form a solid center-back partnership and help the team achieve great success," Araujo shared.

Strengthening the defense with a quality center-back was Liverpool's top priority in this summer transfer window. The Merseyside club recently bid farewell to Ibrahima Konate after the Frenchman's contract expired, while the right-back position has been constantly affected by injury issues.

Liverpool's management highly values Araujo's experience. In January this year, he was handed the captain's armband at Barcelona, highlighting his role and influence at the Catalan club. Additionally, having completed the full pre-season preparation with Barcelona has helped Araujo maintain his fitness and quickly adapt to his new team. He is expected to join his teammates in training this week.

During his time at Barcelona, Araujo won three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. He hopes to add more silverware in the Liverpool shirt, a club that just endured a disappointing season, finishing empty-handed across all competitions. That result forced manager Arne Slot to leave the helm just one year after leading the Reds to the Premier League title.

"There is no doubt about our goal: to win trophies. Liverpool always competes in every competition and aims for every possible cup. When you play for a club like this, you must set the highest targets. I will give everything I have on the pitch to help the team realize that ambition," Araujo emphasized.

The Uruguayan defender also revealed that he received good wishes from two fellow countrymen who previously played for Liverpool, Luis Suarez and Darwin Nunez, before his move to Anfield.

Araujo's arrival brings added depth to Liverpool's defense under new manager Andoni Iraola. With Jeremy Jacquet just returning from a knee injury, Giovanni Leoni still in the final stages of recovering from an ACL injury, and Joe Gomez not yet ready for the start of the season, Liverpool needed another top-class center-back to share the burden with Van Dijk.

In addition to strengthening the defense, Liverpool continues to seek reinforcements up front. The English club is reportedly monitoring Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola closely, though they will not spend beyond the player's true value in order to maintain the sustainable financial model the club has pursued for years.
